YNN Buffalo Reporter Doug Ruffin visits the LEWAC (Lasting Education for Women, Adults and Children) Men’s Health Seminar that was held in Buffalo, New York in October 2009. The seminar is designed to address the need for African American men to take more stock in their own health care. The seminar provides interactive physician led workshops on Diabetes, Hypertension and HIV/AIDS. There were also health screenings for high blood pressure and cholesterol. Enjoy!!

“The Family Legacy” is an emotional three-part drama which explores the impact that the birth of a child with sickle cell disease has on four generations of the same family. As they struggle with the decisions and overcome their misconceptions and superstitions, they come to understand what the baby will mean for each of them.

The story is drawn from the real-life experiences of people living with sickle cell disease and their carers.

In Part Two…

The family begins to realise what it means to live with sickle cell disease. Femi continues to refuse to take the test that would prove he is also a carrier of the sickle cell trait and therefore the father of the baby. Meanwhile the eldest family member Mama Yomi believes that the family’s misfortune is the result of a curse due to someone’s jealously!

The Harlem Children’s Zone provides free education, social services and health care to children and families within a 100 block area in Harlem in New York City. A radical new course is trying to help young black boys build their self esteem with the support of strong, black male mentors and teachers. Set up by charismatic American Dr Richard Majors, Rites Of Passage aims to teach young boys about fatherhood, sexuality, spirituality and most importantly, masculinity.This program follows the progress of the boys and their teachers in Moss Side Manchester, England to see if the course can rescue a generation at risk of being forgotten by society.
