Robert Chambers

For Robert Chambers, music is the one of the keys to his life and success. From he was four years old, he knew that music would lead him to higher ground. During this interview, Robert shares his story with us from some of the challenges growing up in a church family with six brothers and sisters, to working full-time and going to college full-time, to coming to the realizing the music would be his mission. He also talks about the importance about knowing about the business side of music. Robert has released two albums with two more albums scheduled for release next year. He also developed a revolutionary music program called, “The Any Key Music System” (http://www.anykeymusic.com/).Its focus is to equip anyone, who follows this system, to be able to Master the Art of Playing the Piano by Ear . He also plans to release a music book next year.If that is not keeping him busy enough, he also teaches music and has just celebrated his first wedding anniversary. By the way, he and his wife are planning to release a singles book on dating in February 2011. Does he sleep? Enjoy!!

I am sure that many of us are hearing and watching about TIFF (The Toronto International Film Festival). We are watching and looking at the stars, the celebrities, the films, the documentaries and the parties. Well, one of the documentaries that has been shown at TIFF, “Waiting For Superman”, is one we should see when it becomes available.  The film is about how the American public school education system is not providing quality education to many of students, especially those in the inner city.  If you click on the link below, you will be able to read more about the film and the press conference after the screening of the film at TIFF in which Geoffrey Canada, founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, an organization that boosted educational standards in a particularly disadvantaged New York neighbourhood, singer John Legend and Microsoft founder Bill Gates spoke about the film and the challenges that the American public school system faces. We would like to thank a friend of  “The Dr.Vibe Show”, Nigel Barriffe, for bringing this article to our attention. This film should make us take action with our own education system. GEOFFREY CANADA SPEAKING ABOUT EDUCATION

In his 20-plus years with Harlem Children’s Zone, Inc., Geoffrey Canada has become nationally recognized for his pioneering work helping children and families in Harlem and as a passionate advocate for education reform.

Since 1990, Mr. Canada has been the President and Chief Executive Officer for Harlem Children’s Zone, which The New York Times Magazine called “one of the most ambitious social experiments of our time.” In October 2005, Mr. Canada was named one of “America’s Best Leaders” by U.S. News and World Report.

In 1997, the agency launched the Harlem Children’s Zone Project, which targets a specific geographic area in Central Harlem with a comprehensive range of services. The Zone Project today covers 100 blocks and aims to serve over 10,000 children by 2011.

The New York Times Magazine said the Zone Project “combines educational, social and medical services. It starts at birth and follows children to college. It meshes those services into an interlocking web, and then it drops that web over an entire neighborhood….The objective is to create a safety net woven so tightly that children in the neighborhood just can’t slip through.”The work of Mr. Canada and HCZ has become a national model and has been the subject of many profiles in the media. Their work has been featured on “60 Minutes,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” “Nightline,” “CBS This Morning,” “The Charlie Rose Show,” National Public Radio’s “On Point,” as well in articles in The New York Times, The New York Daily News, USA Today and Newsday.

Michael Couteau

Wherever Black Canadian men are going, it is Black Canadian men are going to take them there.

One Black Canadian man that is committed to taking Black Canadian men to a better place is Michael Coteau. Michael was first elected in November of 2003 and re-elected in 2007 as the School Board Trustee representing Don Valley East in Toronto. He is running for a third term as School Board trustee for Don Valley East.

Michael shares his growing up years, experiences and thoughts with us from growing up in a challenging neighborhood, getting interested in politics as a junior high, being a Black man in Korea as a young man, working in the not for profit world, winning his first election at 30 years old and why education and Black men voting is so important.
