The Dr. Vibe Show: "THE EVOLUTION OF GOSPEL MUSIC" – FEBRUARY 4, 2011 AND FEBRUARY 5, 2011 AT 7:00 P.M.

“The Evolution of Gospel Music” is in its third year. In 2009 and 2010, audiences of over 1,500 people were moved and energized by the power of the production that spans over a period of more than three centuries. Come and feel the power of this inspiring stage production and hear the moving voices of the Juno Award winning Toronto Mass Choir.

The production launches Black History Month on February 4, 2011 with its musical journey from the early days of Negro spirituals, through the turmoil of the ’60s, to today’s contemporary gospel music scene. The production boasts a phenomenal cast representing some of the best Canadian actors, dancers and gospel musicians and celebrates the music of Thomas Dorsey, Mahalia Jackson, James Cleveland and other iconic artists. In addition, special guest artist Diane Clemons, wife of Mike “Pinball” Clemons, will make her first appearance in the production bringing her powerful and soulful voice to the cast.

Writer and director of The Evolution of Gospel Music, Aadin Church, (known for his roles in Miss Saigon and The Lion King), said, “In its 3rd year as a Black History Month event, this is a must see production for all. It dynamically depicts a triumphant legacy of gospel music – inspiring and enlightening audiences every year.”

In this episode, we talk with Michelle Lynch, president of the Canadian Association of Black Journalists (CABJ). Michelle is also Coordinator of Volunteer Services for Rogers TV – York Region.

From she was eight years old, Michelle wanted to get involved in the media. She went to Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario for journalism. It was not what she expected. So after her first year she changed her program to French and attended York University in Toronto. After graduating from York University, she left the media world for a few years. While working for a large sporting goods company, she started blogging when blogging was not as big thing. Blogging allowed her to she reacquire with her love of media and she has been involved with the media since (3 years at CBC – in the area of Business Affairs and Audience Communications and the last 6 ½ years at Rogers as as Volunteer Supervisor – York Region).

During out interview which was recorded in late December 2010, Michelle talks about and shares about various subjects including practicing doing newscasts from she was very young (Oprah was her first influence), how she got involved in journalism and became President of CABJ, the state of Black journalism in Canada, how Blacks can get involved in journalism and the digital world’s effect on journalism.

The Dr.Vibe Show: Sherman Moore – A Overcomer With A Positive Attitude

Sherman Moore is a overcomer with a great attitude. Why? Because he is having a great life even though he had sickle cell for over fourty years.

Mr. Moore grew up in Barbados. He came to Toronto when he was thirteen years old and worked for many years in the areas of sales and sales management in the IT and insurance industries. He is married with three sons and lives at the present time in Mississauga, Ontario with his wife and two of his sons.

At eight years old, he began feeling severe pain attacks that would last two to three days at a time three to four times a years. No one knew what was the cause of these pain attacks. The pain attacks continued after he arrived in Canada at thirteen years old. At seventeen, he was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia. Two years before he was diagnosed, one of his sisters died from sickle cell anemia the day after birthing a child. Four out of the nine children that his parents had were diagnosed with sickle cell.

During this interview, Mr. Moore talks and shares about his life, the history of sickle cell, how one’s life is affected if they have sickle cell, why Black men need to check to see if they have sickle cell, what the medical community needs to better deal with sickle cell and how he has overcome it and is thankful to be alive.

He also gives exciting news that a bill has been introduced in the Canadian House of Commons (Bill C605 on December 13, 2010) to have the Minister of Health to initiate discussions with the provincial and territorial health ministers to develop a comprehensive national strategy for the health care for persons who have sickle cell.
