The Dr. Vibe Show: MPP MIKE COLLE – BILL 165 – BILL TO IMPROVE SICKLE CELL AND THALASSEMIA CARE IN ONTARIO

On Thursday March 10th, 2011, MPP (Minister of Provincial Parliament – Ontario) Mike Colle introduced a private member’s bill, Bill 165, Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Care Ontario Act, to establish a provincial body called Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Care Ontario.

Mr. Colle was first elected as an MPP in 1995. In October 2007, he was re-elected to serve his fourth term to represent the riding of Eglinton-Lawrence in Toronto, Ontario.

Prior to this, Mike served as a City of York councilor and a Metropolitan Toronto councilor where he served as TTC commissioner and was chair of the TTC from 1992 to 1994.

Mike currently is the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Children and Youth Services. He also serves as a member of the Standing Committee on Justice Policy.

During this interview, MPP Colle talks and shares about his involvement with sickle cell and thalassemia Care, the process that it took to get the bill introduced, what difference the bill would make if it is passed and what we can do to help.

Dr. Wesley Crichlow is a tenured Associate Professor in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities Program – University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa, Canada, where he teaches Introduction to Criminal Law; Introduction to Customs and Immigration Law; Introduction to the Canadian Legal System; Rights and Freedoms in The Canadian Justice System; Youth Crime & Diversity and Legal Issues in Law.

Dr. Crichlow was born in Trinidad & Tobago and has been in Canada for over thirty years. When he was growing up he wanted to be a professor or a lawyer. He choose to be a professor. He is dedicated to break the hopelessness and helplessness in the Black community and helping the Black community come together as a collective

During Dr. Crichlow talks about various subjects dealing with Black men including the shortage of love tolerance and respect, homophobia, young Black men anger, “hypermasculinity”, Black men’s violence, mental health, the culture of silence and is needed to break it, parental discipline, sex, Black men not showing their feelings and not talking, parenting, Black men and the church, the gap between young and old Black men, social media and education. Dr. Chrichlow closes the interview by providing solutions.
