Angelot Ndongmo was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario but lives Brampton, Ontario. She is one of three sisters and has been a youth worker for many years. She had a confused childhood in which she and her sisters were the only Black children is school. When she was younger, she realized that a lot of environment did not reflect her. Because of this, she realized when she need to write books for young Black children. As an author, she wants to instill positivity in young Black children and have them being in love with who they are. The books in the “Loving Me” series are her first children’s books and first contribution towards helping to fill that void.
During our chat Angelot shares various things including her “Loving Me” journey and how Knowledge Book Store (owner, Sean) helped her, how long it took to write her first book, what it felt like getting her first book in her hands, the process of marketing her books, after she surprised her first book for girls what inspired her to write a second book for boys and how she approached the book for Black boys, where you can get her book, why Black parents should buy her books, why don’t have more Black writers, the world of self publishing, some of her favorite books, when she likes to write, her thoughts on Black youth and her concerns about how they don’t know who they are and what do we need to do to solve this problem and her vision for 2012.
