0

Orrin “Checkmate” Hudson was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He is the middle child in a family of six sister brothers and six brothers. Growing up he had a lot of love and not a lot of resources. In 1978, Orrin was taught by a White gentleman how to play chess. This mentorship lasted four years and was the turning point in his life. He went into the air force after high school and then he had a career as a state trooper. His career as a state trooper taught him to treat people with respect and courtesy. A few years ago, an event changed his life and began his efforts to developing and empower young people through chess. Today, he is the head of the Be Someone organization.

During our chat, Orrin talks about a number of subjects including what he thinks what is going on in young peoples minds, what we need to teach young people, the importance of adding value to people, how he came up with the name “Be Someone”, the power of self employment he was working with Steve Harvey, the changes he would like to see with the school system, the importance of mentorship, his book “One Move At A Time: How To Play and Win At Chess … and Life!”, some of his core values and his thoughts about technology.
