The RBC Black History Month Student Essay Competition

The Royal Bank of Canada is encouraging students to enter this year’s RBC Black History Month Student Essay Competition.

The essay competition offers high school students who will be applying to a Canadian university or college for the 2013/14 academic year the chance to be awarded one of three scholarships ($3,000, $2,000 & $1,000) for their essay on how black Canadians have helped to define Canada’s diverse heritage and identity through their achievements and contributions to the broader society.

Essays will be judged by a panel of esteemed Canadians including Mitzie Hunter, CEO – Civic Action, Dwight Drummond of CBC and Mr. Justice Irving Andre, Superior Court of Justice. Winning essays will be profiled during February 2013.

Essays must be no more than 750 words and must be submitted by December 17, 2012.

CEEN is also now available in Canada on Rogers Digital Cable on channel 684. Broadcasting exclusive 24-hour per day programming from around the Caribbean, CEEN carries the most varied and best selection of programming from Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Barbados and the rest of the Caribbean.

Ryan Knight – Detailing Knights

Ryan Knight is 29 years old, married with one daughter and is the president of Detailing Knights. Detailing Knights does more than car detailing. They do waterless car washing, teach students how to run their own business.

Ryan uses the environment to make money. He was born in Toronto and moved to Brampton (which is just northwest of Toronto) at seven years old and has lived there since. He has three sisters and one brother.

During our conversation, Ryan shares about:

– Quitting college after one year to work full time and then going back to school
– Being laid off two weeks before he was supposed to get married in 2009
– Where did he get the influence to start his own business Detailing Knights started in 2009 and where did the business idea come from
– Graduating from post-secondary school in 2012 after ten years
– What were his parents and his wife thoughts on having his own business
– How he met his wife and how he proposed for her
– Where does his passion to help young people
– Where did the “eco” come into his life
– How does he keep up and balance everything (family, business, media)
– What has he learned about himself by being an entrepreneur – how has his business changed since he started
– The features and benefits that Detailing Knights offers and what makes it unique
– How the company’s marketing has changed over the years (approaching condominums)
– His thoughts on the youth of today
– Some game changing moments in journey of Detailing Knights and it’s future
– Some nuggets for current and would be entrepreneurs
– The excitement that he felt with the birth of his daughter
