Man Enough: Jason Collins and Black Masculinity

When Jason Collins named himself a Black gay man, he situated himself in a very precarious intersection in the American psyche—the space in our collective consciousness that still imagines a limited Black manhood that fails to see Black men as anything but representations of the hyper- and hetero-sexual. The Dr. Vibe Show™: The Dr. Vibe Show™ Is Now Being Featured At “The Good Men Project”!

The Dr. Vibe Show™ At The Good Men Project

The Dr. Vibe Show At "The Good Men Project"

The Good Men Project set out to spark a national conversation about what it means to be a good man in the 21st century. Founded by Tom Matlack in 2009, it started as a book, a film, a series of events. And is now an robust, engaged online community.

Through first-person narratives of and about men, as well as issue-based posts designed to provoke, engage and provide insights, The Good Men Project has become a thought-leader on the issues of manhood and masculinity in these changing times. It celebrates the goodness of men as they are, while also providing readers with a way of examining their own moral compass and articulating the good within themselves. The platform is designed to create a robust and passionate community around the issues of manhood and goodness, and collectively provide a vision of how men can grow and thrive in the future.

There is a growing acknowledgement in our culture that the old tools for measuring manly success aren’t up to the job in our rapidly-changing world. Twenty-first century masculinity—whether you believe it’s in crisis or just going through some overdue growing pains—needs thought leaders, and no media entity is as well-positioned to help define the future of manhood as The Good Men Project, with its diverse, thoughtful collaborators.

Over 10 million people have visited The Good Men Project in the two years since it started. Its success—despite warnings that men don’t read, and that a website for men without scantily-clad women will never fly—is proof the world wants to be a part of the conversation we have started.

The Good Men Project is built around the talent, vitality, and diversity of its growing group of evangelist-contributors, and their distinct and yes, often conflicting voices. Our editorial mission is not to smooth over our contributors’ rough edges. Consistent with Tom Matlack’s original vision, The Good Men Project is here to help you tell your story, to amplify its “raw truth,” and to help you reach a wider audience.

The Good Men Project strives to enable our content contributors to consistently write stories that, in voice and content, would not be published anywhere else. The content is always fresh, personal, and provocative exploration of men, issues that impact men, and what it means to be good in any aspect of manhood. Among the categories it explores are Sex & Relationships, Gender& Sexuality, Ethics & Values, Dads, Families, Sports, Marriage & Divorce, Conflict: War/Prisons/Violence, Social Justice, Education, Business & Work.

We are pleased to announce that The Dr. Vibe Show™ will have some of its podcasts featured on The Good Men Project!! We would especially like to thank all at The Good Men Project for this opportunity!! We would like to thank: Lisa Hickey (Publisher of The Good Men Project. CEO, Good Men Media), Joanna Schroeder (Senior Editor at The Good Men Project) and Cameron Conaway (Social Justice Editor at The Good Men Project) for their outstanding help in making this happen!!

We look forward to helping The Good Men Project grow in a positive direction!!

Black Daddies Club – The Black Family Values Tour

“The Black Daddies Club Family Values Tour” has been rolling through the Toronto over the past few weeks! During that time, we engaged members of the community and tackled some controversial issues. The Tour has given space for Black men, Black fathers and those who care for and love them to come together and have some real, no-holds-barred talk about matters that are near and dear to us. Let’s keep the momentum going, family!

The upcoming scheduled discussions are as follows:

Date and Time: Wednesday, May 8th, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Location: Pathways, Artscape Building, 585 Dundas St. East, Regent Park

In this discussion we will look at Black masculinity and what it means to be father who is a ‘provider’. We will examine the challenges that Black fathers face as effective co-parents when they are not employed or aren’t in possession of a diploma or degree. We will speak about opportunities for Black fathers to secure employment and cast light on the programs that enable adults to attain post-secondary qualifications.
——————————–

What does being ‘present’ mean to a child? What effects does father absence have on the child? How is the presence of the father not recognized as being of equal in value to that of the mother in the life of the child? In addition, we will be identifying the factors that may prevent fathers from being present. Opportunities for mentorship and ‘parenting’ the community will also be shared at this session. There will also be a screening of the short film “The Son” from Exousia Media

What are the messages that we are telling our young boys and girls about Black masculinity? What opportunities are there for a different discourse in Black masculinity that could potentially lead to the development of better fathering practices?

The Dr. Vibe Show™ is honored to co-hosting the “How can I be a provider if…? Employment and Post-Secondary attainment among Black fathers” presentation on Wednesday, May 8th, 6:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m.
