In honor of International Men’s Day, Marie Roker-Jones and myself are focusing on bringing awareness to the emotional and mental well-being of boys and men.

According to the World Health Organization, “Males are four times more likely to die from suicide than are females.”

Boys and men are less likely to ask for help or talk about depression or thoughts of suicide.

Join us for our ‘What Kind of Man Do You Want to Be?’ monthly discussion on men, #depression and #suicide

Our guests: Kevin Breel a writer, a stand up comic and an activist for mental, Keith Wright CEO + Director of Business Development | Marketing square shaped circles, Publisher: LOVE IS and writer and Meaghan Rigler, Founder of Hearkn Online Therapy

As part of our discussion, we hope to address the stigma associated with #mentalhealth as well as address ways boys and men can seek help without feeling like they’re weak or vulnerable.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: JD Vishus

0
JD Vishus
JD Vishus

JD Vishus has always had an uncanny ability to convey feelings and messages through poetry. So in 1986 he decided to marry this uncanny ability with his natural love for music. He started a rap crew with some friends called SC Roc. The crew made a few demo tapes but never got anywhere. In 1987, JD decided to become a solo artist with Dj Marvel J backing him up. He started making a name for himself around Toronto, performing in many shows including the legendary Monster Jam series at the Concert Hall, 1987 and 1988.

In 1989, JD made his television debut on the Electric Circus. Between 1989 and 1994, JD continued making songs and shopped around for labels. Disillusioned by that endeavor as well as the state of Hip Hop at the time, JD started performing Spoken Word Poetry. Again, JD started to gain a name with a different crowd. In the coming years, he performed in many venues around North America, all around Toronto, plus Detroit, Montreal, the Nuyorican Cafe in New York, and London, England.

In 1997, JD Vishus was featured on “Wordlife: Tales of the Underground Griots“, an excellent compilation of Canadian poets including Jemini and Dwayne Morgan. In 2003, JD won an “Open door pitch prize” at that year’s Innoversity Summit. The prize enabled JD to create a radio documentary for CBC radio’s Outfront show. The documentary was entitled “Would You Like Some Shepherd’s Pie With That Roti?” The piece was autobiographical and told completely in poetic form by JD. The show was aired in 2003, February 2004 and again in February of 2013. In 2004, JD had a near death experience. He suffered an asthma attack. From that time on he went into hyper mode establishing his sound and ensuring that his music got out to the largest amount of people. He completed his first album “Alleycat Sensibilities” in 2005 and thereafter established his website. JD continued to expand his sound. In 2013, he released his Mixtape entitled “Run Get This” coupled with a mini-film. Stay tuned as this mixtape may prove to be a door to the world, an exciting prelude to JD’s second album due out in late 2013, early 2014.

During our conversation, JD talks about:

– A little about his background and his parents
– How he started rhyming in the 1980’s and branched out to do spoken word poetry in 1994
– Why did he switch from hip hop to spoken word poetry
– His discovery of music at a young age how did his parents handle is love of music
– The importance to him of getting his university degree
– His first spoken word performance in 1994
– It being tough getting back in the entertainment industry after getting his degree
– His thoughts on the Canadian hip hop music scene
– Does he question getting back into the music scene?
– Some highlights of his journey
– His thoughts on the state of Black Canadian men and what Black Canadian men are telling him
– His thoughts and the Black Canadian family
– The experience of him losing his mother to cancer in 2011 and his mother’s sister passing away a year after that
– What is his mother’s legacy
