The Dr. Vibe Show™: D. Channsin Berry “‘The Black Line’ profile of the African-American Women-Part 3 A Journey of Passion, Truth, and Race.”

"The Black Line" profile of the African-American Women-Part 3 A Journey of Passion Truth and Race.
“The Black Line” profile of the African-American Women-Part 3 A Journey of Passion Truth and Race.

Filmmaker, D. Channsin Berry says that it was a divine calling which prompted him to create the documentary series, “The Black Line”. (A Profile of the African-American Woman) Part 3. The 75 minute documentary features a broad spectrum of other African-American women.

The Black Line, appropriately titled, is a film that provides insight into some of the thoughts, practices, and feelings of some African-American women, revealing a consistent thread distinguishing them from women of other ethnicities. The documentary highlights shared truths and experiences touching each of the featured participants regardless of their socio-economic standing. Berry painstakingly probes the commonality among his subjects, crossing regions, religions, sexualities, and professions.

The Black Line-Part 3 delves into the reasons why some younger African-American women may, according to their elders, be the way they are today. Through dialogue with distinguished women, possible solutions to the young black women’s dilemma come to fore. From voices and memories of these women, Berry explores the African-American women’ survival and destiny from the 1920’s to the present. Using the various institutions of marriage, mothering, racism, careers, education, religion, and sex, he guides the viewer through a journey of exploration and discovery of the history and future of African-Americans as a people.

Mr. Berry is the Founder of the D. Channsin Berry Foundation, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to raise funds for LUPUS awareness.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Live Tonight At 7 P.M. Eastern/4 P.M. Pacific – Isis Brantley And Rhadamés Julián – Know Your Roots Natural Hair And The “Movement”

0

On Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Shark Bar & Grill (Shops At Willow Bend) in Plano, Texas from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Bella Kinks is presenting “Know Your Roots” Natural Hair and The “Movement”.

During the afternoon, there will be in-depth discussion, with an all-star panel to talk about the powerful documentary “FOLLICLE” and the disparity with natural hair for people of the African Diaspora.

Follicle is a hybrid documentary film about how hair and imagery create barriers that limit people of the African Diaspora from reaching their true identity. With insight, humor and depth, the film will define where these barriers originate and how they’ve become ingrained in the psyche of people of color across the globe. Filmmaker Rhadamés Julián explores these issues by taking the viewer on an organic first person quest through several countries, talking to scholars, performers, and everyday people about how these issues affect our society and how we can make a change.

Follicle shows the historical perspective to help connect what happened in the past to what happens today and what has to be done to change the way things are now. A narrative story with a superhero element will be interwoven through the documentary, addressing the lack of positive and powerful images of people of color in film and television. By taking control over how we represent ourselves, people of color will undeniably benefit from having a stronger sense of identity, connection to the past, and ultimately, empower future generations to define themselves. The goal of the film is to ignite a global movement by motivating people of color to reject false imagery, reject false icons and return to their natural hair state.

Two members of the panel, Rhadamés Julián and Isis Brantley, a master natural hair stylist WHO has been a vibrant spokeswoman for black ancestral culture for over thirty years talked about Know Your Roots Natural Hair And The “Movement” event.

He also served as Assistant Provost and Director of the Johnson Black Cultural Center at Vanderbilt University. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Winbush, is a product of public school education, K through 12. At Vanderbilt he was Assistant Provost of the university, held an adjunct professorship in the Department of Psychology and was Associate Professor of Human Resource Development at Peabody College. His research interests include infusing African American studies into school curricula, African American adolescent development, Black male and female relationships and the influence of hip hop on contemporary American culture. He is the author of numerous articles on the “politics” of Afrocentricity and the resistance it encounters among scholars who wish to maintain existing intellectual paradigms. A recent article for the Baltimore Urban League coauthored with his colleague Dr. Tracy Rone at the Institute for Urban Research, cited the hidden dangers of environmental lead poisoning in Baltimore City.

He is the author of three books, including his latest, Belinda’s Petition: A Concise History of Reparations for the Transtlantic Slave Trade, (Xlibris, 2009) a “prequel” to his book, Should America Pay?: Slavery and the Raging Debate on Reparations which was published by HarperCollins in 2003 and hit Essence Magazine’s bestsellers list shortly after its release. It has been called by Cornel West a “must read” when it comes to understanding the struggle for reparations. His book, The Warrior Method: A Program for Rearing Healthy Black Boys, (Harper Collins, 2001), is a comprehensive African-centered program for rearing healthy Black boys in a racist society.

Rap stars Chuck D and other members of the hip-hop community attended, as well as well-known psychiatrist Dr. Frances Cress Welsing. The Race Relations Institute is the only institute of its kind housed at a historically Black university. Another grant from the Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith Foundation is helping to establish The Warrior Institute in Baltimore that teaches the Warrior Method to parents, teachers and community activists.

His consultations are numerous. He is a former member of the Executive Board of the National Council for Black Studies. He has held Board memberships on the Center for Democratic Renewal chaired by Rev. C. T. Vivian and the National Vanguard Leadership Program, chaired by Camille Cosby which has been instrumental in recording the lives of elders in the American African community.

His travels include Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, France, England, Holland, Barbados, Belgium, Honduras, Ecuador, Senegal, Cote D’Ivoire and Jamaica, where he seeks to understand how African people have influenced world culture. He has made appearances on CNN, the CBS Morning Show and Black Entertainment Television and the Oprah Winfrey Show with the cast of the critically acclaimed film, Crash.
