The Dr. Vibe Show™: I Can’t Be Boxed In

Just about everybody pursuing opportunity in the United States agrees on at least one thing: Our own, individual ability to succeed, whatever the odds. This simple truth is often drowned out by the partisan divide between those who believe in so-called personal responsibility and those who recognize profound institutional barriers to success. But race, gender and political identity all set to the side, nobody wants to believe their dreams are held captive by insurmountable, institutional forces. And that’s the overwhelming sentiment filmmaker André Robert Lee encountered when he went asking young, black men in Philadelphia about their efforts to find work and build careers. I can do it, they said, The System be damned.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Marc Hudson

Marc Hudson

Marc Hudson is an amateur filmmaker and father of 1 son and an social activist. He became frustrated with the family court system during his divorce several years ago. After the judge informed him that he was only allowed to see his son 2 weekends a month, he felt there was something wrong. He decided to speak with other fathers going through the similar issues. Those conversations spawned his current film project highlighting the issues noncustodial fathers/ parents encounter. He started conversing with noncustodial dads in 2012. A group of recently divorced fathers and Marc shared stories about no longer being able to spend time with their children anytime they wanted. They talked about feeling rejected as life events occur in their child’s life and they are not able to be there during those times.

Marc has documented about 25 conversations with fathers from all across Georgia. His goal is to complete 75 more. He will also continue to converse with representatives from the medical and educational sector (e.g. social workers, psychologists, counselors, educators, etc.) to provide more insight. These films will initially be geared towards organizations that help to establish and strengthen the bond between parent and child, but will eventually expand to a wider audience.

During our conversation, Marc talks about:

– Some background including not meeting his father for the first time when he was ten years old and growing up without his father
– His journey from boyhood to manhood
– Some of the challenging issues he faced during his divorce
– His thoughts on how the judicial system treats fathers who are going through a divorce who want to have custody of their child(ren)
– the story behind his project to have and document conversation with 100 noncustodial fathers
– What are noncustodial fathers sharing with him
– What does his family think about the project
– How does he get fathers in front of the camera
– Some thoughts on what he feels that can be done to help noncustodial fathers
– What legacy does he want to leave for his son
