Janet Campbell“Purpose Finds His Gift” – Janet Campbell
Janet Campbell’s second illustrated children’s book Purpose Finds His Gift encourages parents to help children discover and nurture their talents early.
Inspired by her own son’s struggles, Campbell’s book is an enchanting story of one young boy’s journey to uncover his own gift. After a year of college, Campbell’s son felt lost and uncertain of his future—as many young people do. “As a parent I felt responsible for my son feeling lost. I wished I had encouraged him earlier on to look within himself to find his gift and ultimately his purpose,” remarks Campbell. “Now, I’m a grandmother, and being a grandparent I feel like I can have a second chance to be a parent. I came up with this story to encourage my grandson to think about his own personal value and skills. Realizing what a valuable resource and tool it was in explaining this concept to a young mind I decided to write it to help other parents share this important lesson.”
Purpose, the main character in the book, sets out on a journey to discover his gift and looks in all the wrong places. Seeing the talents of others he begs to borrow their gifts. He asks if “Only for a little while” to borrow the majesty of the tree, the voice from the ocean, and the brightness of the star. Ultimately Purpose learns that he should have been searching within himself to find his gift. Listening to his inner voice he discovers to be the best version of himself he has to follow his own talents, instead of borrowing them from others. “I think we are all lost like Purpose at some point in our lives,” says Campbell. “I started writing to preserve the stories my grandfather told me growing up in the Caribbean. Eventually I realized that I too am a storyteller. My clients at my hair salon were always begging me to tell them another story, and even as a child my elders would say my imagination was too wild. Like Purpose I always saw the talents of others first, but ultimately found my own talent within myself.”
Campbell published her first children’s book Kafiya Meets the Moon in 2012 receiving rave reviews. She wrote the story nearly 12 years prior to publishing it. “Like Purpose my journey to find myself wasn’t easy. I considered myself a storyteller, but never a writer. After my grandson was born I started considering the legacy I was going to leave behind and that is why I published my first children’s book. I will never consider writing my profession, but more of a method to share my talent and my stories.”
Ms. Campbell will be live on our show tonight at 7 p.m. Eastern/4 p.m. Pacific.

These days we’re talking a lot about gender: about sexism, discrimination, sexual assault, and gender roles. Actor, author and former NFL Football player Terry Crews, who is well known for his work on the TV series Brooklyn Nine-Nine and his appearances in ads for the brand Old Spice has written a book called, Manhood: How To Be A Better Man or Live With One., TVO’s Elamin Abdelmahmoud spoke with him about masculinity, feminism, and what it means to be a man in the 21st century.
Cool, international, independent, politically incorrect and eye-opening, the Toronto Black Film Festival (TBFF) is about discovery. TBFF will showcase the most outstanding and most powerful Black films while creating a space to debate major cultural, social and socio-economic issues.
The Toronto Black Film Festival is dedicated to giving unique voices in cinema the opportunity to present audiences with new ways of looking at the world. A dynamic, refreshing and audacious Festival whose ambition is to encourage the development of the independent film industry and to promote more films on the reality of Black people from around the Globe.
The Toronto Black Film Festival (TBFF) was created in 2013 by the Fabienne Colas Foundation, a not-for-profit, professional, artistic organization dedicated to promoting Cinema, Art and Culture in Canada and abroad. The Fabienne Colas Foundation is also the creator of the very successful Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF).
After 8 years of continued success, the Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF), presented by Global Montreal, has expanded to the vibrant and beautiful city of Toronto. The inaugural Toronto Black Film Festival was presented by Global Toronto from February 13 to 17, 2013.
The Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF) was created in 2005 by the Fabienne Colas Foundation. Formerly the Montreal Haitian Film Festival, the first edition of which consisted of 3 films in 3 days, today the MIBFF has become the youngest and already the largest festival of its kind in Canada thanks to its bilingualism (its films are subtitled in either French or English), its international press coverage, its growing movie-goers base (tens of thousands), the number of countries represented (40 in 2012), the large number of films and premieres presented each year (more than one hundred), as well as the number of distinguished guests who attended (Legendary activist, singer, actor Harry Belafonte, Hollywood Legend Danny Glover, Legendary director Souleymane Cissé, Oscar nominated director Kim Nguyen, Award-winning actress Tantoo Cardinal, Bestselling author and speaker Stedman Graham, Actor and Rapper Bobby Brown, Director Darrell Roodt, Award Winning author Dany Laferriere, Academy Award nominated Director Spike Lee and many more…).
Recently, Ms. Colas came on the show. During our conversation, Ms. Colas talked about:
– How the Montreal International Black Film Festival began ten years ago and how did the the Toronto Black Film Festival got its start
– How did her careeer in film began
– The lack of diversity on the screen in Canada
– The different experiences launching the Montreal Black Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival
– Some of the highlights from this year’s Toronto Black Film Festival
– What it takes to make the Toronto Black Film Festival happen
