THE BLACK DADDIES CLUB IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR THEIR ADVISORY BOARD (ONE YEAR TERM)

0

The Black Daddies Club (BDC) located in Toronto is looking for some volunteers for their advisory board. Check it out …

The Black Daddies Club (BDC) was founded in 2007 by Brandon Hay in response to the lack of forums and spaces for Black men to discuss parenting issues as well as the issues facing the Black Community as a whole. The main goal is to change the image of black fathers in the media, from a neglectful figure to a responsible, involved and loving role model.

BDC Mandate/Guiding Principles

• To develop a continuous support system for black fathers to share their challenges and or experiences

• To host events featuring various speakers both high-profile and “everyday” people who inspire and encourage positive practices for Black fathers and community members generally

• To work with various media outlets to provide alternate images of black fathers

The Black Daddies Club (BDC) is currently recruiting 11 volunteers to be apart of an advisory board (1 year term) as well as community agencies to partner with for our latest initiative called the Holistic Integration Programming (H.I.P).

About H.I.P (Holistic Integration Programming)

The H.I.P is a 3 step model initiative focused on successfully integrating incarcerated individuals back into society upon their release:

1. Youth Center – working directly with the young men that are incarcerated at various youth centres or prisons, to break a negative cycle and replace with a positive cycle; using methods of mentorship and various community partners

2. Community – working with these men when they are released into the community,

3. Long- Term Community – ensuring that the individuals making sure these men are independent to navigate through the systems to acquire the help if needed.

Our proposed role for the advisory committee is to provide strategic input to BDC that will assist in accomplishing the goals set by the H.I.P. initiative. Your contributions as part of the advisory committee will be much appreciated and we will do our best to accommodate all members of the committee to ensure that your participation is possible. As part of the initial step of the H.I.P. BDC is currently recruiting and setting up the advisory committee. The advisory committee’s term end date is July 2011. The advisory committee will be consulted approx 4-5 times over the course of the project’s timeline. Meetings will take place in person as well as by phone and via e-mail. Our initial in person is tentatively scheduled for early June.

We are particularly interested in candidates and agencies with grassroots community engagement experience.

Specifically, we are seeking:

• Individuals or community agencies with the capacity to assist is areas such as social work and research, law, family law and human rights, social development, education (post secondary), rites of passage, mental health, social justice movements, and employment

• People who bring a perspective that encompasses the general experience of visible minority groups

• People from various ethnic identities, cultural traditions and backgrounds

• People who understand from their personal experience, work, and/or volunteer activity issues important to vulnerable or marginalized community members

• People who live or work in any of Toronto’s 13 priority neighbourhoods

Send your letter of interest to info@blackdaddiesclub.com identifying your skills and qualifications. (Deadline: May 2nd, 2010)

If you are interested in hearing more about the H.I.P. initiative, BDC will be conducting a community meeting open to the general public on Saturday, May 1st (1p.m.-3p.m.) at Harlem restaurant (67 Richmond Street East just east of Church street, http://www.harlemrestaurant.com/aboutus.html). Admission is free.

THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS IS HAVING THEIR 36TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN TORONTO FROM MARCH 31, 2010 TO APRIL 4, 2010

0

We are always pleased to share positive information and events with you. Here is one of them …

FEBRUARY 23, 2010

It’s a Black History Month story with role models who aren’t Musicians or Sports heroes.

It’s the story of ten thousand Black engineers who will be coming to Toronto for the National Society of Black Engineers annual convention from March 31st to April 4th, 2010.

The National Society of Black Engineers is one of the largest student-run organizations in the US, centered on improving the recruitment and retention of Black engineering & science students. It diligently follows its mission to “increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community”.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG), an province of Ontario government run corporation, recognizes the long term benefits of partnering with this organization and will be funding the convention registration for the students from a local Toronto high school, Blessed Mother Theresa in Scarborough, Ontario. OPG has taken a vested interest in this school, and since October 2009 10-Pickering based employees visit a local high school, to help students prepare for the Engineering Design &
Tri-Math-a-Lon competitions taking place at the annual convention.

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) organization of over 30,000 members spans all ages with 3 core targets groups: Pre-College Initiative (from grades K-12), Collegiate (college & university students), and Technical & Professional (Alumni & Industry Colleagues). The convention themed “Engineering a Global Impact” will be the largest black professional event ever held in Canada, with mini-conferences focusing content to each of the 3 core groups, a 300+ company career fair, many networking and tour opportunities.

There are many more opportunities to help students attending this convention. For more information visit http://convention.nsbe.org or call (416) 520-2138.

I AM A BLACK MAN …

0

We hope that 20X (2010) brings you, your families and loved ones blessings and favor!!

We thought that we would share a poem that we feel will provide educatione, empowerment, enlightenment and encouragement to Black Canadian men and those love them. It is a poem titled, “I Am A Black Man” by George Edward Tait. Enjoy!!

I AM A BLACK MAN by George Edward Tait

I am a Black man
An Afrikan man
My history is that of humanity
My roots predate the calendar
My contributions are
all that is / has been / will be thought (i.e. civilized ideas)
all that is / has been / will be said (i.e. cultivated words)
all that is / has been / will be done (i.e. creative words)

I am a Black man
An Afikan man
My father’s son
My thoughts include his thoughts
My blood and bone and flesh include his
My work include his spirit
I follow in his footsteps
I continue them-
and make my own

I am a Black man
An Afikan man
Speak not to me of compromise
I am straight line i.e. will
I am upward i.e. growth
I am circle i.e. fulfillment
My goal is perfection
My path is productivity
My vehicle is power

I am a Black man
An Afrikan man
Re-ascending my throne
I tolerate no obstacle
Hindrances do not deter me
I feed on impediments
I shall purge my kingdom

All poaches beware
It’s game warden time

I am a Black man
An Afrikan man
Do not attack me with media cries of Chauvinism
(Exploitation is a foreign product-imported by Negroes)
Do not try to change me-I reject the effeminate
Do not ask me to cry-tears are the for the trembling and watery eyes anathema to the warrior
(i.e. the enemy must remain in focus until the enemy no longer remains)
Do not attempt to domesticate me-
I cannot protect you with dishpan hands

I am a Black man
An Afrikan man
In time of war
Present me with harmony but
Speak not to me of peace
Until victory is ours
Present me with unconditional love
That I might
Present us with unconditional liberation

I am a Black man
An Afrikan man
Acknowledge my strength
Offer me not prizes for weakness
Do not encourage the superficial
Tempt me not with diversion
If you are my friend-fight by my side or heal my wounds
If you are my enemy-confess

I am a black man
An Afrikan man
Detained
But not destroyed
Enslaved
But not extinct
Conquered and
Oppressed
But not for long

I am a Black man
An Afrikan man
Fighting for the future / heading for home
Manhood
Be my momentum
Nationhood
Be my challenge
Familyhood
Be my reward
