The Dr. Vibe Show: AUTHOR JOYCE M. JOHNSON TALKS ABOUT HER BOOK "HENRIETHA"

2

Henrietha - Joyce M. Johnson

In this episode, we talk and share with author Joyce M. Johnson. Ms. Johnson Ms. Johnson has just authored her first book, “Henrietha”. “Henrietha” ‘fictionalized’ chronicle (borne by two novellas -“Henrietha”and “Waiting for the World to Change”) of the life, times and consciousness of a woman in the snare of misfortune and malevolence. It revolves around dialogue and rich recounts amongst its characters which are drawn from real life scenarios. “Henrietha” is a gripping novel of  a troubled Jamaican woman of many woesome years and with a compelling history of abuse, through marriage to male chauvinist and philanderer, Demian Browne. Some years later, Henrietha Browne, randomly  meets, Joanna White, at a Caribana event. Their life journies are candidly disclosed with one another . In their sharing, they realize although they are from different worlds, their life experiences are parallel.

Ms. Johnson was born in Jamaica where she spent her formative years and has lived in Canada for over 40 years where she attended high school and college. After graduating from college, her long successful career began at Dover Elevator where she worked in main frame computing as Operator and Programmer. She ventured into entrepreneurship by operating Dove Courier Messenger Service and later Johnson Production which she operates with a socially sensitive mandate around its creative essence.

Joyce studied creative writing at Seneca College, Toronto and has written newspaper articles for the Uprising International Newspaper. She has had her written material aired on CBC, Toronto.

The years of living in Canada have awakened Joyce’s consciousness. She’s been led by inner and outward influences to engage in social dialoguing at the ‘community level’ as to write about and share her wealth of experiences developed in Canada. Shaped in part by her Jamaican past, her sensibility reflects a combined effect – the island past betrothed to a continental existence to produce what she expects to be appreciated as  universal accounts of the human condition.

Ms. Johnson tells us some of her story, the first thing that she wrote thirty years ago, what Black men message will get from reading “Henrietha” and advice for Blacks who may be interested in becoming an author. Enjoy!!

If you would like more information about Ms. Johnson and “Henrietha” including where to purchase the book, please go to http://www.henrietha.com/page8.php. The Dr. Vibe Show: DALTON HIGGINS – FATHERHOOD 4.0: iDAD APPLICATIONS ACROSS CULTURES

3

Fatherhood 4.0: iDad Applications Across Cultures

We have Dalton Higgins back!!

Dalton is considered one of Canada’s foremost experts on popular culture. He has recently written his fourth book, “Fatherhood 4.0: iDad Applications Across Cultures”.

In “Fatherhood 4.0: iDad Applications Across Cultures”, some of Canada’s most acclaimed multicultural personalities, public figures, intellectuals, entertainers, athletes, and activists share stories, memories, insights, and revelations about fatherhood, from comic to tragic.

As an African-Canadian fatherhood advocate, Dalton also digs around to see how Black fathers of this millennium are faring, as academics and pundits have debated for decades what is at the heart of the problem when it comes to the much-publicized shortcomings of Black fathers.

The book spots trends across a newer generation of media-savvy multicultural dads influenced by everything from George Lopez and Bill Cosby to the Osbournes and Obama, with keen insights and essays from fatherhood activists. It includes essays on the “baby daddy” phenomenon and Bob Marley, pops in popular culture, technology and parenting, and crucial research on aboriginal fatherhood by Dr. Jessica Ball.

Some of the people interviewed are: Michael “Pinball” Clemons, Broken Social Scene’s Charles Spearin, Toronto FC’s Dwayne De Rosario, Bollywood Boulevard’s Mohit Rajhans, George Elliot Clarke, Hal Niedzvicki, Lawrence Hill, dramatist Richard Lee, CBC Radio’s Matt Galloway, social entrepreneur Sol Guy and more!!

Dalton has written three other books. He also co-directed and produced “More Than A Haircut”, the critically acclaimed documentary about Black fathers and barbershop culture.

Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with Dalton about “Fatherhood 4.0: iDad Applications” at Harlem Restaurant in Toronto. Enjoy!!
