Meet Eric Schwartzman. He is senior communications professional with broad experience in online communications, corporate communications, public relations, public affairs and marketing for leading brands, start-ups, non-profits and government agencies. Eric specializes in online communications strategy, social media policy development and accelerating social media literacy within organizations.

He is coauthor of “Social Marketing to the Business Customer”, the first book devoted exclusively to B2B social media (business to business) social media communications.

We had the opportunity to speak with Eric while he was driving to an appointment in Los Angeles. Eric tells us a little bit of his background going back to the early days of live chat (pre You Tube, pre Facebook), what was the game changer in his time dealing with B2B social media, the power of social when it comes to business, the state of B2B social media and why he sees a growth market for B2B social media in the future, where the opportunities are with businesses and social media and the biggest mistake that most businesses make.

Rochelle Dickenson is passionate about helping Black children succeed in the education system.

Rochelle is graduate of the University of Windsor (Honors Degree in Criminology) and also has a post graduate certificate in dispute resolution. She is a trained mediator. Rochelle is a licensed Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) representative.

Rochelle talks and shares about various issues such as what Black paents need and can do to have their children succeed in today’s education system in the environment of program cutbacks, what is an RESP, the importance to have an RESP for children (shows that parents are committed to child’s education) for as little as $40/month, the fact that there are programs and scholarships available out there that we can take advantage of, the many ways that education can make a difference in a child’s life, if Blacks don’t pursue education we will be left behind and ; her thoughts on why some Black parents not investing in their children and their education.

Richard Stewart portrays Marcus Garvey in the play “I Marcus Garvey” which is being performed from March 16, 2011 to March 27, 2011 at the Peppermill Theatre (67 Pottery Road) in Toronto. For more information about the play go to http://www.theatrearchipelago.ca/.

Richard was born in Jamaica and moved to Canada (Ottawa) with his parents when he was five years old. In 1996, he moved to Toronto to pursue a career in acting or aviation. He chose acting and has not looked back since. He graduated with a degree in fine arts from York University in 2003.

During the interview, Richard talks and shares about various subjects such as his memories of Jamaica, starting and serving as president of “The Lions Circle” (http://www.thelionscircle.com/, an African Canadian Black men’s empowerment group based in Toronto, Ontario) from 2003 – 2008, how playing Marcus Garvey is the synthesis of two things that are important to him: arts and the uplifting Black people, the importance of Marcus Garvey and his importance to all Black people, how he landed the role and how theatre has changed his life.

The Dr.Vibe Show: Jay Martin “Comedy Chose Him”

Jay Martin

Jay Martin has been one of Canada’s top comedians for the last few years.

He is the youngest of seven children. His parents got divorced when he was five years old which resulted in him lacking a father in his life. His mother passed away on his sixteenth birthday. This is when “comedy chose him”.

During this interview, Jay talks about how he kept on going during his challenging days while he was growing up, being homeless for a period of time, the moment that he found out that comedy was going to be his career, why he is a “clean” comic, the business and science of comedy and his favorite comics. He is even provides some nuggets for those who may be interested in becoming a comic.

When we recorded this interview, Jay had a special announcement. He told us that he will be opening up in Canada for Kirk Franklin in Toronto (June 4, 2011), Ottawa, Montreal and in Nova Scotia. These concerts are now confirmed. As soon as we have more information on these concerts, we will post it!!

Pepper Miller founded The Hunter-Miller Group (HMG), a consumer research, trend analysis and marketing strategy company, in 1985 and, since then, has been helping Fortune 500 companies understand how to effectively and positively market their products and messages to the African-American market. Some corporate clients include: American Airlines, American Greetings, Allstate, General Motors, General Mills, GSK, Ford Motor Company, Hallmark Cards, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Procter and Gamble and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Pepper and co-author Herb Kemp launched the landmark African-American cultural marketing book, What’s Black About It? Insights to Increase Your Share of a Changing African-American Market in October 2005.

Pepper served as a research consultant for the largest study about African Americans to date; the Black America Today (http://blackamericastudy.com/) segmentation study – commissioned by Radio One and conducted by Yankelovich. The study was launched June 2008.

Pepper tells us how she got her start in advertising companies to having her own advertising agency, what makes the African American market different and her thoughts on the American American market, that Black culture still matters, that black advertising agencies are in trouble, how African American reacts differently to advertising than other groups, some of the challenges that African American face especially with the fact that 71% of African American children are born from single mothers, the differences in Blacks, how to market your product to the African American marketplace and the effect of the internet and technology on the African American marketplace.

Walker works in Atlanta, Georgia and Chicago, Illinois and has decade of public health experience in the United States and around the world. He worked at the world renowned Center For Disease Control for seven years. Walker has learned about health systems in the United States and other countries, HIV, cancer prevention, global health, health communications and public policy. He recently received his graduate degree in clinical and social health from the University of Chicago and is a licensed social worker.

During our interview, Walker discusses various subjects such how he went from a career in television journalism to public health, how he ended up working up the Center of Disease Control, the serious health challenges that African American faces probably similar to African Canadian men face and why Black men are overrepresented in these areas and the issues of politics getting in the way of health data and money not following where health concerns are and the birth of Healthy Black Men out of “frustration, inspiration and passion”.

The Dr.Vibe Show: Junior Burchall – The Journey Of Black Fatherhood

Junior Burchall

Colwyn (aka “Junior”) Burchall, Jr. is the author of two books, “Look for Me in the Whirlwind: A Story of Marcus Garvey” and “Freedom’s Flames: Slavery in Bermuda and the True Story of Sally Bassett”. He is currently working on his third children’s book, entitled “Freedom Song” tentatively scheduled for publication in 2011. He is also working on an anthology titled “A Song For You: Black Men On Father Hood, Father Hunger and Healing”. Junior is also the editor and sometimes contributor to the “Black Daddies Club Weekly” column is Sway Magazine at http://swaymag.ca/category/people-community/black-daddies-club/. The Black Daddies Club (BDC) is a Toronto, Ontario, Canada based organization that was founded in 2007 by Brandon Hay in response to the lack of forums and spaces for Black men to discuss parenting issues as well as the issues facing the Black Community as a whole. The main goal is to change the image of the black father in the media, from a neglectful figure to a responsible, involved and loving role model.

Junior was born in Bermuda and is married with two sons (six and two years old). He is now living in Toronto. Junior states “that my main existence now is being a father”.

During our chat Junior shares about his father being MIA since he was nine years old, how important his older brother and his mother were to him growing up, the pain of growing up without a father, what he thinks it takes to be a man, the conscious decision to have children and get married, the myths about Black fathers and where do they come from, the importance of Black fatherhood in Black children’s lives and “Father Hunger”. He also has a message on Black fathers for Black women.
