Shawn Byfield, the co-creator and choreographer for the Dora Award-winning musical, “I Think I Can”. He is trained various dance forms including in tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, modern, African, swing, ballroom, partnering and B Boy. He also teaches dance at his studio and appears in movies.

During our interview, Shawn talks and shares about various subjects such as how seeing the legendary Gregory Hinds starts his tap dance journey, his first performance, the first show he choreographed, the importance of his mother in his life, the challenges pursing the dance career, the most challenging part of his journey and what his professor future holds.

On Thursday March 10, 2011, Mike Colle, MPP (Minister of Provincial Parliament) for Eglinton-Lawrence in Toronto, Ontario introduced a private member’s bill to establish a provincial body called Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Care Ontario. MPP Colle is calling for a provincial strategy to develop comprehensive coordinated care, promote awareness, and advocate for individuals living with these disorders.

In this episode, Sherman Moore, a return guest to the show, talks about the significance about this event and how we can help get this bill passed. Mr. Moore has been living with sickle cell for over forty years of his life and is doing fine with his family and three sons. Back on February 18, 2011, we were attending an event put on by the Harriet Tubman Community Organization. Before the event, we had the opportunity to speak and share with international motivational dub poet from Jamaica, Charlie Bobus.

During the interview, Charlie talks about being in business on his own, his latest CD (“Creative Energy”), the difference between dub poetry and other forms of poetry, the biggest challenge in being a dub poet and the importance of change in Black men’s lives. He even drops some poetry for us.

Simon Alexander

Simon Alexander is a 28 year old self employed up and coming “social media mogul” He was originally born in Inglewood, New Jersey and now currently resides in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Florida State University with a Degree in Creative Non-Fiction and Journalism and Minor in Film. He later went to attain a Masters Certification in Editing and Publishing.

He worked as a Capitol Hill reporter for the Washington Informer for a year covering Barack Obama’s transition into The White House back in 2008. In 2009, he decided to operate solely online because he found out that he could make more money writing articles online than for a brick and mortar publication. He is now involved in using social networks to promote his own content and also making money from promoting the content of others, helping people increase their Twitter followers, selling products and drawing traffic to his blogs.

During our interview, we chat about his journey including why he decided to attend law school and when and why he decided to operate solely online.
