Norwood Holland

Norwood Holland is a freelance and lawyer who practices labor law. His first published book is called “Sleepless Nights”.

Norwood grew up in Washington, D.C. descendant of the slaves of the first American president, George Washington. He grew up in a all Black world which changed when he started going to a segregated high school were there were limitations.

Norwood tells us about the love his mother gave him when he was growing up, how he started read his mother’s romance novels when he was growing up, how he enjoyed reading fiction more than going than to law school,

Norwood continues our discussion by then telling us how he didn’t start writing until after completing law school, how he published his first book after writing for 20 years, story behind “Sleepless Nights”, the importance of Black men and mental health and how it is part of “Sleepless Nights” and his call to action in regards to dealing with Black men and mental health.

The Dr.Vibe Show: Orrin "Checkmate" Hudson – "Heads Up, Pants Up, Grades Up And Never Give Up”

Orrin “Checkmate” Hudson was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He is the middle child in a family of six sister brothers and six brothers. Growing up he had a lot of love and not a lot of resources. In 1978, Orrin was taught by a White gentleman how to play chess. This mentorship lasted four years and was the turning point in his life. He went into the air force after high school and then he had a career as a state trooper. His career as a state trooper taught him to treat people with respect and courtesy. A few years ago, an event changed his life and began his efforts to developing and empower young people through chess. Today, he is the head of the Be Someone organization.

During our chat, Orrin talks about a number of subjects including what he thinks what is going on in young peoples minds, what we need to teach young people, the importance of adding value to people, how he came up with the name “Be Someone”, the power of self employment he was working with Steve Harvey, the changes he would like to see with the school system, the importance of mentorship, his book “One Move At A Time: How To Play and Win At Chess … and Life!”, some of his core values and his thoughts about technology.

On the last day of February this year, we spoke about Black history month with Kenya Williams.

During our conversation, Kenya admits that she did nothing for Black History Month 2012 and why, how she feels about it, what she is doing to change this.

We then discuss a number of subjects including why many Blacks are not celebrating Black History, how her daughter celebrates Black History, Is the celebration of Black History Month fading away?, her need to know about her own personal history, what people from Black History that she would like to meet and what Blacks need to do to keep the celebration of Black History Month going strong.

We end the show by getting an update on what is going on with Kenya.

Freedom Seeker, Freedom Leader by Rosemary Sadlier

Dr. Rosemary Sadlier is the president of The Ontario Black History Society. Dr. Sadlier is of African Canadian descent and is married with three children. Her professional background is in education and social work. During our conversation she provides some history on the Ontario Black History Society (Canada’s first Black History Society which started in 1978), how the OBHS helped Toronto become the first place in Canada to recognize February as Black History Month, the OBHS role in having February recognized as Black History Month in Canada since February 1996.

Dr. Sadlier also expresses the need for African Canadian material in schools and what needs to be done to change this situation.

Dr. Sadlier also tells us about her book about Harriet Tubman and some great stories about Harriet Tubman, “Freedom Seeker, Freedom Leader”.

Question Bridge: Black Males is a transmedia art project that seeks to represent and redefine Black male identity in America. Through video mediated question and answer exchange, diverse members of this “demographic” bridge economic, political, geographic, and generational divisions.

Question Bridge: Black Males was created by Chris Johnson and Hank Willis Thomas in collaboration with Bayeté Ross Smith and Kamal Sinclair. The Executive Producers are Delroy Lindo, Deborah Willis and Jesse Williams. Transmedia components were created by Innovent.

During this podcast, Chris Johnson and Bayete Ross Smith of the Question Bridge talk about there backgrounds and their lives growing up and how their lives relate to Question Bridge, how to Question Bridge came into existence, how the name came about, what the Question Bridge is, the effect that it has had on them, some of the questions that Black men ask, why the project is a transmedia project, how it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and some testimonials about the positive response to Question Bridge.

Witness to Innocence is America’s only organization composed of, by and for exonerated death row survivors and their loved ones. These individuals are actively engaged in the struggle to end the death penalty, challenging the American public to grapple with the problem of a fatally flawed criminal justice system that sends innocent people to death row.” From the Witness To Innocence website

During our conversation David shares about various subjects including some of his background, some interesting experiences that he had in law school, why and when he left the corporate world to human rights, the law and Black men, why people have not demanded changes in the justice system and what needs to be changed with the current justice system including policy and changes needed within the Black community.

We close our discussion by discussing Troy Davis case and how it was a turning point, the death penalty, how do we get justice with so many roadblocks?, some startling stats about how most of the death penalty executions happen in the southern United States, David’s future vision and his words for Black men.
