The Dr. Vibe Show™: Race Relations And The Power Of Forgiveness

0

The power of forgiveness. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s call for the removal of the Confederate flag from the state Capitol could be a signature moment in American history.

It came a week after a horrific massacre of nine people at a historic African-American church in Charleston. And it came days after families of those victims emotionally said they would forgive — rather than give in to bitterness and hatred.

Now, other southern states – such as Mississippi and Alabama – are having renewed conversations about their public displays of the stars & bars. To some, it’s a symbol of history. To others, it represents hate.

Stan Simpson talks with Reverand Lydell Brown and Quinnipiac Instructor Stephen Balkaran about what could be a seminal moment in race relations in America.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Watch Bree Newsome Climb A 30-foot Flagpole To Take Down South Carolina’s Confederate Flag

Bree Newsome, an organizer and activist from Charlotte, North Carolina, took down South Carolina’s Confederate flag this morning by climbing up the 30-foot flagpole on statehouse grounds.

“We come against… hatred, oppression, and violence. I come against you in the name of God,” Newsome shouted as she climbed the flagpole. “This flag comes down today.”

As soon as Newsome got down from the flagpole she was arrested and charged with defacing monuments on state capitol grounds, according to the Associated Press. A crowdfunding page has already garnered more than $17,000 in donations toward her bail.

The South Carolina legislature is set to vote on taking down the Confederate flag, which requires a two-thirds majority in both houses. The flag has flown over the statehouse since 1962, when it was put up as a symbol of resistance to racial integration.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Jon Stewart On Charleston South Carolina Shooting

0

[embedplusvideo height=”283″ width=”450″ editlink=”http://bit.ly/1HoKw16″ standard=”http://www.youtube.com/v/mjzrvRKv6Ks?fs=1&vq=hd720″ vars=”ytid=mjzrvRKv6Ks&width=450&height=283&start=&stop=&rs=w&hd=1&autoplay=0&react=1&chapters=&notes=” id=”ep2120″ /]
Jon Stewart of The Daily Show apologized to his audience tonight for not having any jokes for them, as he just dropped the comedy to get serious about Charleston. He said, “I honestly have nothing, other than just sadness.”

“By acknowledging it,” Stewart pointed out, “by staring into that and seeing it for what it is, we still won’t do jackshit. Yeah, that’s us. That’s the part that blows my mind.”

He contrasted how the U.S. does whatever it can to protect everyone from foreign threats, but has an “eh, what are you gonna do?” attitude to domestic threats.

Stewart brought up the racial wounds being opened in Charleston, especially invoking how South Carolina still flies the Confederate flag and has roads named for Confederate generals.

He sarcastically added, “And the white guy’s the one who feels like his country’s being taken away from him.”
