The Dr. Vibe Show™: ‘Stand Your Ground’ Laws ‘Humiliating’ Blacks, Latinos, Put Them ‘In Physical Danger’

‘Stand Your Ground’ Laws ‘Humiliating’ Blacks, Latinos, Put Them ‘In Physical Danger’

Yesterday, MSNBC’s The Cycle debated the likelihood that an acquittal of George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin would result in riots in the black community. One guest asserted civil unrest will not come about as a result of the acquittal alone, but preexisting conditions of poverty and humiliation may be inflamed by a not guilty verdict. She specifically cited state-level “Stand Your Ground” laws which have the effect of “humiliating” and endangering African-Americans and Latinos.

MSNBC host Touré began by asserting that those commentators warning of riots were insulting members of the black community with the insinuation that African-Americans could not react to a not guilty verdict nonviolently.

He said that this belief is similar to the profiling that he asserts Zimmerman engaged in when he determined Martin was a threat. “It almost always is accompanied by economics and people saying, ‘We don’t have any other way to speak,’” he added. “That’s what happened in LA [in 1992], not just the acquittal.”

MSNBC contributor Maya Wiley agreed. She noted that the unemployment rate in the black community is nearly twice the national average. “It’s not that we don’t have some of those conditions,” she said.

“One of the things that people are looking for in this case is as a nation are we going to pay attention to the fact that 24 states have ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws – sometimes they’re called ‘make my day’ laws,” Wiley added.

“Those are some of the conditions that are producing what, really, what I would call a process of humiliating people who are black, people who are Latino, and putting them in physical danger like Trayvon was in,” she asserted.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Frustrated – Black Men In Brazil

0

[embedplusvideo height=”298″ width=”480″ standard=”http://www.youtube.com/v/BOjvPOBvd9A?fs=1″ vars=”ytid=BOjvPOBvd9A&width=480&height=298&start=&stop=&rs=w&hd=0&autoplay=0&react=1&chapters=&notes=” id=”ep2222″ /]

Al Greeze decided to produce Frustrated after reading a September 2006 Essence Magazine article (Blame it On Rio) written by Professor William Jelani Cobb, which stated that African men were travelling to Brazil for sex vacations with Brazilian prostitutes and the adulation of the Brazilian women Greeze wanted to either confirm or deny and reveal the answers from the men themselves and find out if it is for love and companionship or just sex. The effect may have been suspected but what is the cause?

Through research, personal accounts and testimonies from the men who fall in love or date Brazilian women and the reaction and opinions of the women both in the U.S. and in Brazil, the film touches and unlocks some heartfelt emotions to these complex issues including the economic and educational divide between the sexes and the possibly unachievable roles each places on the other. Although the film exams the controversial topic of relationships outside of the African American race and the country, the film’s goal is to elicit open conversation and communication amongst men and women, strengthen the family dynamic and give both sides a platform to give an honest account.

Frustrated ask such questions as why are African American men finding love outside of their race, what do they feel is missing from African American woman and are African American women now in competition with Brazilian women as they are with other races…is there really a threat, or are the women saying good riddance we don’t need you or are they fighting for their men?

A few weeks ago, The Dr. Vibe Show™ lost a friend, a brother and a mentor Richard Iton (aka “RIton”). We first met “RIton” a number of years as part of, “Brotha To Brotha” an older Black group of Black men in Toronto who mentored younger Black men. “RIton” was the deep thinker of our group who always looked out for the best interested of each mentor and mentee. “RIton” loved his music.
