[embedplusvideo height=”380″ width=”450″ editlink=”http://bit.ly/UsMzK9″ standard=”http://www.youtube.com/v/iYhsnLdUiUs?fs=1&vq=hd720″ vars=”ytid=iYhsnLdUiUs&width=450&height=380&start=&stop=&rs=w&hd=1&autoplay=0&react=1&chapters=&notes=” id=”ep7001″ /]
President Barack Obama may have opened a can of worms when he waded into the deep waters of racism and racial stereotypes when he recently claimed there was an “element of truth” to the notion that black people should be “acting white” in regards to their speech patterns, clothing preferences, and other behaviors. The topic of black children acting white came up during a town hall event called My Brother’s Keeper. The portion related to black Americans begins at about 4:30.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: I Can’t Be Boxed In

[embedplusvideo height=”380″ width=”450″ editlink=”http://bit.ly/1sMc6h0″ standard=”http://www.youtube.com/v/N7Cfhb7gjQw?fs=1&vq=hd720″ vars=”ytid=N7Cfhb7gjQw&width=450&height=380&start=&stop=&rs=w&hd=1&autoplay=0&react=1&chapters=&notes=” id=”ep6102″ /]

Just about everybody pursuing opportunity in the United States agrees on at least one thing: Our own, individual ability to succeed, whatever the odds. This simple truth is often drowned out by the partisan divide between those who believe in so-called personal responsibility and those who recognize profound institutional barriers to success. But race, gender and political identity all set to the side, nobody wants to believe their dreams are held captive by insurmountable, institutional forces. And that’s the overwhelming sentiment filmmaker André Robert Lee encountered when he went asking young, black men in Philadelphia about their efforts to find work and build careers. I can do it, they said, The System be damned.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Mellody Hobson “Color Blind Or Color Brave?”

[embedplusvideo height=”380″ width=”450″ editlink=”http://bit.ly/1m2uqZE” standard=”http://www.youtube.com/v/oKtALHe3Y9Q?fs=1&vq=hd720″ vars=”ytid=oKtALHe3Y9Q&width=450&height=380&start=&stop=&rs=w&hd=1&autoplay=0&react=1&chapters=&notes=” id=”ep3889″ /]
The subject of race can be very touchy. As finance executive Mellody Hobson says, it’s a “conversational third rail.” But, she says, that’s exactly why we need to start talking about it. In this engaging, persuasive talk, Hobson makes the case that speaking openly about race — and particularly about diversity in hiring — makes for better businesses and a better society.

Mellody Hobson handles strategic planning for the Chicago-based Ariel Investments, one of the largest African-American-owned money management firms in the United States. Beyond her work at Ariel, Hobson has become a nationally recognized voice on financial literacy and investor education. She is a regular contributor and analyst on finance, the markets and economic trends for CBS News, contributes weekly money tips on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and writes a column for Black Enterprise magazine. As a passionate advocate for investor education, she is a spokesperson for the Ariel/Hewitt study, 401(k) Plans in Living Color and the Ariel Black Investor Survey, both of which examine investing patterns among minorities.

Hobson is chair of the board for DreamWorks Animation. Her community outreach includes serving as chairman of After School Matters, providing Chicago teens with high quality out-of-school-time programs.
