‘What Kind of Man Do You Want To Be’ – “Manhood in 2014” – December 11, 2013Marie Roker-JonesShannon WattsMark BownessThe Dr. Vibe Show – Info For Black Men And Those Who Love Them
Our year end #ManYouWantToBe hangout “Manhood in 2014: Game Changers for a Better Community”, will feature two very special guests Shannon Watts and Mark Bowness who are making a difference in two areas of importance for males: emotional well-being and gun violence.
Shannon Watts is a 42-year-old mother of five children (two step-daughters, 23 and 19; two daughters, 17 and 16; and a 12-year-old son). For the past five years, Ms. Watts has been a stay-at-home mom in Zionsville, a suburb of Indianapolis, Indiana. Prior to that, she had a 15-year career as a communications executive for both public relations agencies and Fortune 500 corporations. Ms. Watts was not an activist or involved in gun issues prior to the shootings at Sandy Hook on Dec. 14, 2012. The day after the tragedy, she started a Facebook page called Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Since then, Moms Demand Action has become a nonprofit organization with tens of thousands of members and more than 80 local chapters across the country. Ms. Watts’ goal is for Moms Demand Action to become the Mothers Against Drunk Driving of safe gun laws.
Mark Bowness at the age of 26, Mark Bowness’s marriage ended. As he sat in his apartment surrounded by everything that he and his wife had built together, he felt his future looked incredibly bleak. After Googling “how to take your own life,” Bowness made a decision that life was too much to bear and attempted to end the pain. It was while sitting in a hospital bed after trying to wipe his existence off the face of the planet that he realized he had been alive for 26 years, and yet, he had never truly lived.
As the New Year approached, Bowness began to contemplate what his New Year’s resolution would be. After comprehending that his previous resolutions had failed, he began to understand that changing one element of his life, while other elements remained the same, was futile. In fact, what his life needed was a complete overhaul – a revolution.
Mark became fixated with a pursuit to discover the principles of life change that would take him from “Suicide to Success.” And soon, they became clear. The result of the application of those principles was that in a matter of only three months after trying to take his own life, Mark had leased a 200-acre desert island in Fiji, and had created a business called Tribewanted that inspired people to build an eco-community in Fiji, which they could then visit. Tribewanted was featured in media around the world including Good Morning America, The Today Show, New York Times and National Geographic. A TV crew filmed Mark and his business for 18 months, turning it into a five-part prime time BBC series, which aired in the UK, America and Australia. Mark indeed had turned his life from “Suicide to Success.”
Mark has created New Year’s Revolution – a free, no-expense eBook, webinar series and community of 31 experts to ensure that 2014 is the beginning of a similar revolution in thousands of lives.
Join the conversation on the hangout, ask our guests questions and be inspired to be a game changer in 2014.
