The Dr. Vibe Show™: #ManYouWantToBe Google Hangout – Changing The Face Of Bullying With Edmund Adjapong And Kwadwo Bediako

0

Marie Roker-Jones and Dr. Vibe Show hosting #ManYouWantToBe conversation on changing the face of bullying.

The guests were Edmund Adjapong and Kwadwo Bediako. They talked about Gully Face, Inc, a campaign to educate and inspire the world with a simple facial expression- the gullyface, with the purpose to eradicate bullying.

Gully Face Inc., the anti-bullying project, was founded by Kwadwo Bediako, a Ghana-born resident of New York City. The campaign began amongst his friends, and as a branch of his clothing line, AM Clothing, although it all started under a different name, “Stale Face”. The initial concept, reflected the facial expression of a hard-worker, of someone determined to “make it big” in his or her life. It symbolizes the face that made one stand strong and firm against any oppressor and Kwadwo strongly believes, to this day, that the face motivated him and his friends to push through any obstacle that got in their way.

Edmund Adjapong, a native of the Bronx, NY, is a New York City Public School science teacher and a student at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Education in Science Education and received a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry and minor in Africana Studies from The State University of New York at Plattsburgh. Edmund believes every student has the ability to learn, and does so differently. He also believes that engaging students through urban youth culture, specifically Hip-Hop – despite its unconventional method – is an effective way to educate. Edmund enjoys working with and mentoring youth, especially young men of color. He is the administrator for the Science Genius Program, a program that engages urban students in the sciences through Hip-Hop, and the director of The Science Genius Academy, a program that encourages and prepares students to pursue STEM careers while providing mentoring and support. Following the completion of his masters degree, Edmund plans on continuing education by pursuing his Doctorate of Philosophy in Science Education.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Jean Love Cush “Endangered”

Jean Love Cush talks about her book “Endangered”.

"Endangered" A Novel By Jean Love Cush
“Endangered” A Novel By Jean Love Cush

A native of Philadelphia, Jean Love Cush worked for the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office directly out of law school before spending three years as a family law attorney, helping low-income women escape domestic abuse situations. After moving to Fort Wayne, Indiana, she hosted a one-woman weekly radio show called “A View From Summit,” on which she covered such topics as public safety, urban violence, and inner-city education. Jean now lives in Illinois with her husband and two daughters.

Provocative and timely, ENDANGERED is a superbly written and tremendously moving book by a former attorney that asks if young black boys should be protected under the Endangered Species Act to save them from a biased criminal justice system. Author Jean Love Cush, powerfully adds to the conversation about race, politics and justice.

From the time her son, Malik, could walk, Janae Williams taught him that the best way to stay alive and out of trouble with the law was to cooperate. Terrified for his safety, she warned him, ‘raise your hands high, keep your mouth shut, and do whatever they say,” if the police ever stopped him. But when a wave of murders hits Philadelphia and fifteen-year-old Malik is arrested, Janae’s fear is compounded by guilt and doubt—would Malik have escaped jail if he’d run?

Unable to pay for legal fees, Janae reluctantly allows Roger Whitford, a white human rights attorney, to represent Malik. With the help of an ambitious private attorney name Calvin Moore, Roger is determined to challenge the entire criminal justice system and expose its inherent bias against all black men. Armed with two decades of research, the attorneys make the unprecedented argument that black males should be protected under the law as an endangered species. This controversial case starts a media blitz that results in a firestorm of debate on race, prison and politics in America.

As Malik’s case develops, so does Janae. At first, she is full of fear, living in an isolated world comprised of just her and her son. But as she fights for her son, she discovers that she is also fighting for who she wants to be. Raw and exhilarating, ENDANGERED is a gripping novel about one woman’s determination to save her son.

During our conversation, Jean talks about:

– What influenced her to write the book
– The story behind the book including how long it took to write the book and what
– Her concerns about and her passion to help young black males in America ENDANGERED
– If she thinks if young African men are an endangered species
– The biggest challenge That Jean has writing ENDANGERED
– What is she telling young black men
– Her message about young African American men to: the justice system, police forces, non-black America and black America

The Dr. Vibe Show™: #ManYouWantToBe Google Hangout – Prepare and Protect Your Son in Police Encounters

0

As part of the #ManYouWantToBe conversation in the raising boys section of The Good Men Project, Marie Roker-Jones and Dr. Vibe have a conversation with Steve Silverman of Flex Your Rights.

Steve Silverman is the founder and executive director of Flex Your Rights (Flex).

In his formative years, Silverman did back-to-back internships with the Cato Institute and Families Against Mandatory Minimums. There he became sensitized to the twin evils of overcriminalization and overincarceration in the United States.

Silverman then worked for the national campus effort to repeal a federal law cutting college financial aid to students with drug convictions. As part of this grassroots work, he discovered that the vast majority of people are mystified by the basic rules of police search and seizure and due process of law.
