Candace Simpson is a Brooklyn native and a seminary student. She writes for the Black women’s blogging collective, For Harriet. Candace has been an active participant in solidarity actions after the news of recent non-indictments, including co-organizing a Blackout Black Friday demonstration in Brooklyn. Her latest writing focuses on the ways Black women have been made invisible in recent protest coverage and community responses.

Candace will be live on our show tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Pacfic. She will be talking about her most recent writing, How black women have been erased from America’s race debate.

Kelsey Minor talks about his recent oped piece: Black, Male, Mad As Hell.

Emmy Award-Winning Journalist Kelsey Minor attended Columbia College Chicago, where he earned his degree in Broadcast Journalism and Television.

While at Columbia College Chicago, Kelsey Minor interned with local news organizations learning the craft. Upon graduating, he moved back to Mississippi and took a job as an Associate Producer at the number one station in Jackson, Mississippi, WLBT-TV. Kelsey Minor quickly moved up the ranks to Producer and fill-in reporter. While also in Jackson, Kelsey landed a job as a morning radio news anchor with Southern Urban Network. A network powered by TeleSouth Communications. As morning anchor Kelsey voiced news headlines, heard on radio stations in many urban areas of the State of Mississippi. After two and half years in Jackson, Kelsey Minor moved to Boise, Idaho where he worked as a Reporter for KIVI-TV. After a year of working mornings, Kelsey shifted to evenings and starting working the political beat, covering politics in the capital. From Idaho, Kelsey went on to work as a Reporter and Anchor for Cedar Rapids duo station KGAN-TV/KFXA-TV. Kelsey became well know in the community and would often be the go to reporter for exclusive stories. While in Cedar Rapids, Kelsey Minor secured his first regional Emmy nomination and win for his reporting on a severe weather storm in Eastern Iowa. Emmy Award-winning journalist Kelsey Minor moved to New York City in 2013. In New York he works as a freelancer with multiple news outlets, including Fox News Channel where we works as a writer and African based Arise News Network, where he works as a writer and reporter.

Kelsey has other passions outside of television news. In 2012 he started writing his first novel Unfinished Business; which was published in the Fall of 2013. Currently, Kelsey is working on the follow up to “Unfinished Business.”

Jennifer shares about various subject including attending a Oprah event and Blogalicious and the future of Mind Of A Diva.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Jennifer Baker graduated from Texas State University with a bachelor’s degree in 2009. In college she studied Mass Communications and English in order to pursue a career as a author and public speaker. During her collegiate career she wrote for the school newspaper and has published several articles with one of her articles making the front page of the newspaper.

In her last semester of college, Jennifer’s studies lead her to become involved with blogging and social media. She created her first blog that was based on entertainment news, but after a while she felt a need to write about something more meaningful. After praying for inspiration and guidance, the idea to create a website geared towards young women turned into Mind of a Diva. Three years later she manages, writes, and continues to expand the reach of her brand.

Aside from working on her website she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, being involved in church, volunteering, watching TV, and shopping. She now resides in Houston with her family.

Goodman is also the author of Breaking the Devil’s Heart and Logic of Demons, a widely acclaimed series of existential fantasy novels.

Jamaal Bowman is a husband, father of three, and founding principal of Cornerstone Academy for Social Action (C.A.S.A.) Middle School. Jamaal received his bachelor’s degree in business from the University of New Haven in May 1999 and immediately began his teaching career at P.S. 90 in the south Bronx. After spending five years at 90, Jamaal moved on to serve as the dean of students at the High School for Arts and Technology. In 2008 Jamaal was accepted into New Leaders for New Schools and spent the year writing the proposal for C.A.S.A. while interning at Achievement First Endeavor Charter School. Jamaal is a certified business teacher, guidance counselor, and school building leader, and has used all of his personal and professional experience to build the vision, mission, tone, and foundation of Cornerstone. C.A.S.A., now in its 6th year, has been celebrated for its exemplary school culture, high student achievement, and innovative student centered practices. C.A.S.A. students consistently attend some of the top high schools in New York City including Bronx Science and Brooklyn Latin, and are offered accelerated coursework in Algebra, Living Environment, and English. Jamaal was born and raised in the East Harlem/Yorkville section of New York City, and is a descendent of the Public Enemy, KRS-1, and Rakim thread of hip hop culture. Jamaal is an avid sports fan and vivacious reader, and believes that design thinking, creativity and collaboration will change the world.

During our conversation, Jamaal talked about:

– Growing up in East Harlem being raised by his mother and his grandmother and what they taught him
– How did he choose education as a career
– His first teaching job in one of the poorest school districts in America
– The story behind Cornerstone Academy for Social Action (C.A.S.A.) Middle School
– His thoughts on what African Americans need to do to improve and what can be done to cause better unity in black America
– The disconnect between the civil rights generation and the hip hop generation
– If African Americans are doing enough when it comes to the education of their children
– What does empowerment mean to him
– What is going on in the communities of color that he deals with and his thoughts on what is needed to help them
– The role that hip hop plays in empowering communities of color

After spending five years at 90, Jamaal moved on to serve as the dean of students at the High School for Arts and Technology. In 2008 Jamaal was accepted into New Leaders for New Schools and spent the year writing the proposal for C.A.S.A. while interning at Achievement First Endeavor Charter School. Jamaal is a certified business teacher, guidance counselor, and school building leader, and has used all of his personal and professional experience to build the vision, mission, tone, and foundation of Cornerstone. C.A.S.A., now in its 6th year, has been celebrated for its exemplary school culture, high student achievement, and innovative student centered practices. C.A.S.A. students consistently attend some of the top high schools in New York City including Bronx Science and Brooklyn Latin, and are offered accelerated coursework in Algebra, Living Environment, and English. Jamaal was born and raised in the East Harlem/Yorkville section of New York City, and is a descendent of the Public Enemy, KRS-1, and Rakim thread of hip hop culture. Jamaal is an avid sports fan and vivacious reader, and believes that design thinking, creativity and collaboration will change the world.
