Derik Barnes
The key through any dark time is a beacon of light, a beacon of inspiration and’ hope. We are living in a dangerous time where young men are becoming disempowered, where they are expected to fall rather then rise. Where they are defined by their present circumstances, rather then taught how to shape and create their future.
Derik Barnes grew up in the rough streets of East Baltimore, and knows firsthand the deep and complex challenges of our young men and their environments. Derik was labelled as having a learning disability and put into special education from an early age. A label that could of forever changed how he defined himself and his potential. He saw things weren’t right, the odds weren’t in favor of young men on the rise. He saw things needed to change. He enrolled himself into manhood training classes in his teens.
In these classes he was guided by healthy male role models. Men who had vision, strength and understanding. They gave them support, taught them what it truly means to be empowered, and shared the light of hope to see beyond what they know. They focused on mental, physical and spiritual elevation for these young men, inspiring self-empowerment and the possibility of something more. After excelling in his classes, a changed Derik Barnes began conducting lectures in the very schools he once attended. He became focused on how to inspire, how to elevate. He became a part of the prison reform program and community cleanup program in Baltimore to begin bringing healing to his community through positive action and real concrete solutions. Dedicated to his community Derik Barnes became a public servant working eight years as a Maryland Correctional Officer and presently one of Baltimore’s finest with Baltimore City Fire Department.
