Black Men In College

A recent American study, the National Black Male College Achievement Study, analyzes a cohort of 219 black men (at a range of institutional types) who meet rigorous criteria that define them as “achievers,” to understand both how and why they succeeded in college, and what campus leaders and others might do to help others follow in their footsteps. The Dr.Vibe Show: Live Today At 6 P.M. EST/3 P.M. EST – Chris Johnson and Bayete Ross Smith Of The "Question Bridge" Project

0

Question Bridge

Live today at 6 p.m. Eastern Time/3 p.m. Pacific Time, we will be speaking and sharing with Chris Johnson and Bayete Ross Smith of the “Question Bridge” project.

“Empirical data shows Americans, including Black people, still harbor negative associations with Black males that directly impact their ability to function successfully in this country. Of particular concern are statistics which demonstrate that the over-representation of Black males in the penal system and the disciplinary processes in schools does not correlate to their behavior. In reality, Black males are not more violent, more criminal, or more disruptive than their White male peers. The good news is that a meta-analysis of the social science research shows that there are effective means of overcoming our negative bias about Black males. One of which, is being exposed to more complex, multi-faceted, and whole images and narratives of black males. This is what the Question Bridge project hopes to accomplish. …

Question Bridge: Black Males opens a window onto the complex and often unspoken dialogue among Black men, creating an intimate and essentially genuine experience for viewers and subjects, while providing new opportunities for understanding and healing. This project brings the full spectrum of what it means to be “black” and “male” in America to the forefront. “Blackness” ceases to be a simple, monochromatic concept. …

By creating an identity container (e.g. “Black” and “Male”), then creating a way of releasing the diversity of identities and thought within that container, we can break the container. Question Bridge strives to make it more difficult to say, “Black Males are___.”

If we succeed in deconstructing stereotypes about arguably the most opaque and feared demographic in America, then the Question Bridge model can work to overcome limiting assumptions about any demographic.” (taken from the “Question Bridge” website)

The Dr.Vibe Show: Live Today At 1:30 P.M. EST – Dr. Rosemary Sadlier, Author Of "Harriet Tubman: Freedom Seeker, Freedom Leader"

0

Harriet Tubman: Freedom Seeker, Freedom Leader by Rosmary Sadlier

Dr. Rosemary Sadlier has served since 1993 as the volunteer President of the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS), the first and only provincial heritage organization in Canada focused on African-Canadian history.

Dr. Sadlier has just written a book about Harriet Tubman titled, “Harriet Tubman: Freedom Seeker, Freedom Leader”.

Born in the United States and enslaved as a child, Harriet Tubman (circa 1820-1913) is one of the best-known figures connected to the Underground Railroad. Through her knowledge and outdoor survival skills, honed through her unpaid labour in the fields and through the later connections she made in the abolitionist community, Tubman was well poised to command her followers. By her discipline and example, she never lost a “passenger.”

Tubman’s exploits helped to empower those opposed to slavery and enrage those who supported it. Her success encouraged enslaved Africans to make the brave break for freedom and reinforced the belief held by abolitionists in the potential of black freedom and independence. Referred to as “General Tubman” due to her contributions to the Underground Railroad and to the Union Army, Tubman’s numerous rescue missions ending in Canada helped to build the interest in escape and reinforce the position of Canada as the final stop on the journey to freedom.

We will be speaking with Dr. Sadlier about “Harriet Tubman: Freedom Seeker, Freedom Leader” live today at 1:30 p.m. eastern time.

During the live interview, you have the opportunity to call in and share with us and ask questions via Skype. If you would like to do this, please call us at: doctorvibe42. If you get through, please be patient and we will get to your call as soon as possible.
