The Dr. Vibe Show: Live Tonight At 9 P.M. EST/6 P.M. PST – Sharif Rasheed “Be The 1 Change”

0

Sharif Rasheed

When Sharif Rasheed, a 25 year old African American male, lectures on race relations at universities he fully intends to make you uncomfortable. He speaks candidly and creates an atmosphere that while at times may be unnerving, is ultimately unthreatening.

Mr. Rasheed has the ability to engage people in conversation about issues that have otherwise been taboo. He speaks from a place of experience while providing encouragement to erase all doubt that his speech is just another rant and nothing more. As a result, students feel comfortable discussing their own issues with racial discrimination and inevitably, where they stem from. His ability to relate to his students and create dialogue between races underlines his point about the education systems’ flaws and unwillingness to discuss issues such as psychological enslavement and media’s effect on various races, particularly African Americans.

He combines history with an eclectic mix of current statistics and data to educate people on the troubles that each race experiences, not to convert them. He feels that people, over time, began to embrace their own stereo types. So despite the end of slavery, the vulgar, outdated notion took on a new form that he believes has ultimately created the current state of inequality in this country.

Since creating Bethe1Change, Mr. Rasheed has lectured at Wright State University and has continued to grow a larger following for his blog, which has been featured on several websites.

He is also a 2012 Outstanding Alumni Award Recipient at Wright State University.

As he expressly says in his lectures, “It only takes one.” One person to have the willingness to want to make a difference, to be the change.

Sharif is the head of the “Be The 1 Change” organization. The mission statement of “Be The 1 Change” is:

“The ultimate goal of our organization is to work with youth and inspire them to redefine change and progress. To create a platform that gives people a voice to speak on the change they would like to see. We are inspiring a revolution. One that will initiate new ideas to bring about change and stand up for equality.”

The Dr. Vibe Show: Live Tonight At 9 P.M. EST/6 P.M. PST – Alondra Nelson

0

Alondra Nelson teaches sociology and gender studies at Columbia University. An interdisciplinary social scientist, she writes about the intersections of science, technology, medicine and inequality. These themes are taken up in her most recent book, Body and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Fight Against Medical Discrimination, winner of the Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Book Award from the Race, Class and Gender section of the American Sociological Association.

She is also an editor of Genetics and the Unsettled Past: The Collision of DNA, Race, and History, Technicolor: Race, Technology, and Everyday Life, and “Afrofuturism,” a special issue of Social Text.

Her next book, The Social Life of DNA: Race and Reconciliation after the Genome, traces how claims about heritage and ancestry are marshaled together with genetic analysis in a range of social ventures, including kin-keeping, reparations politics, citizenship projects, and public commemoration.

Alondra’s essays, reviews and commentary have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, Science, Scientific American, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Dissent and the Guardian, among others venues. Her publications also include essays and articles on race and digital culture; “scientism” in black power politics; the use of racial categories in medicine; and the social implications of direct-to-consumer genetic testing, genetic genealogy and social media.

The Ford Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation have supported her research. From 2006-2007, she was an external fellow at the W.E.B Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University and a visiting scholar at the International Center for Advanced Study at New York University. An internationally recognized scholar, she has also been a visiting fellow at BIOS: Centre for the Study of Bioscience, Biomedicine, Biotechnology and Society at the London School of Economics; the Bavarian-American Academy in Munich; and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. Prior to joining Columbia, Nelson was on the faculty of Yale University, where she received the Poorvu Family Award for teaching excellence.

Nelson received her B.A. in Anthropology (magna cum laude), from the University of California, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her Ph.D. in American Studies from New York University in 2003.

A transplanted Californian, she lives in New York City.

Tonight at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST, Professor Nelson will be discussing her most recent book, “Body and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Fight Against Medical Discrimination”

The Dr. Vibe Show: Live Tonight At 8 P.M. EST/5 P.M. EST – Dr. Michelle Teti “Despite Hardships Black Men in Urban Communities Are Resilient”

0

Black men, especially those living in low-income, urban areas, face many societal stressors, including racial discrimination, incarceration and poverty. In addition, these men have poorer health outcomes.

Dr. Michelle Teti, a University of Missouri faculty member who was one of the co-authors of the study, has studied these men’s efforts to negotiate social environments that are not designed to help them attain good health and success.

“Too often, researchers focus on Black men’s weaknesses rather than their strengths,” said Michelle Teti, assistant professor of health sciences in the MU School of Health Professions. “By understanding what’s working, we can reinforce those positive behaviors and help men make healthier choices.”

The study explored resilience — how individuals demonstrate positive mental health regardless of stress and adversity — among low-income Black men living in urban areas. Through interviews, the researchers learned about societal stressors in the men’s lives, including racism, incarceration, unemployment and surviving rough neighborhoods. Despite these hardships, many research participants had found ways to overcome their adversities through five primary forms of resilience: perseverance, commitment to learn from hardships, reflecting and refocusing to address difficulties, creating supportive environments and obtaining support from religion and spirituality.

“It is admirable that these men are resilient in the face of such severe challenges; however, the men’s efforts only can be translated into success if they are supported by social environments and policies that change the odds against them,” Teti said.

Tonight live at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST, we will be speaking with Dr. Teti about this study.

During our live interview, you have the opportunity to call in and share with us and ask questions via Skype. If you would like to do this, please call us at: doctorvibe42. If you get through, please be patient and we will get to your call as soon as possible.
