Denise Oliver-Velez

Denise Oliver-Velez is currently an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology
and Women’s Studies at SUNY New Paltz, where she teaches courses that
explore the anthropology of Africa and the Caribbean, including a
special course for the Women’s Studies Program focusing on the women of the Caribbean.

She is a front page writer for Daily Kos, an editor for Black Kos, and also blogs at The Motley Moose.

She is a consultant ethnographer and data analyst for AIDS research
projects, an HIV/AIDS activist, is a priestess of Yemaya in the Lukumi Yoruba faith, and hosts an online forum for African diasporic
genealogical research at AfriGeneas.

She was the Executive Director of The Black Filmmaker Foundation, Program Director of WNYC-TV, Program Director and co-founder of WPFW-FM Pacifica radio, and a Grants Manager for the Minority and Women’s Training Grant Program of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). She is also a former member of The Young Lords Party (YLP), serving as their Minister of Economic Development and the first woman on their Central Committee, and is a former member of The Black Panther Party.

We are pleased to have Ms. Oliver-Velez on our show live tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific.

On January 25th 2013, 50 young rising entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs will gather at the York Woods Public Library in Toronto for the Branded 2013 Youth Marketing Conference. “Branded” is focused on building the skills, marketing resources and networks of young entrepreneurs from Toronto’s priority neighborhoods, with a focus on African Canadian youth.

We will be speaking with Jacquie St. Kitts, a member of the “Branded” organizing committee tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Pacific.

BJ Garrison

Bishop M. Garrison, Jr., known to most as BJ, originally hails from Lexington, SC. With his mother a former collegiate English instructor and a lifetime educator, BJ quickly gained an interest in both reading and creative writing around the age of nine. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point graduating in 2002. He served two one-year long tours in Iraq with the U.S. Army’s 3rd Army Calvary Regiment, also known as the “Brave Rifles,” and is the recipient of two Bronze Stars, a Meritorious Service Medal, and a Combat Action Badge.

After his time in the Army, he attended and graduated from the William and Mary School of Law in Williamsburg, VA. After law school BJ worked for the Fortune 100 firm Deloitte Consulting LLP in Arlington, VA. Recently, he completed work with the Obama-Biden reelection campaign as the Director of Constituency Outreach and the Director of Veterans Outreach for the Commonwealth of Virginia. BJ currently resides in Arlington, VA.

BJ will be on our show tonight live at 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific. We will be discussing various subjects including one of his most recent articles for The Huffington Post, “Success and the Black Cause”
