The Dr. Vibe Show: Mike Ramey “Proud To Be A Black Man”

Check out this poem written by one of Dr. Vibe’s Allies, Mike Ramey in 2002:

“Proud To Be A Black Man” by Mike Ramey

Today, it may seem,
That we have fallen off the beam,
Hush–don’t fret,
The dust hasn’t settled quite yet
In spite of the MSM lies;
Our marriages are stronger,
Our entrepreneurial drive can’t falter,
I cling to the one–who makes Wine out of Water,
That’s Why–I’m Proud To Be A Black Man!
You may count me down,
But you can’t count me out!
That’s Why–I’m Proud To Be A Black Man!
Think you’ve trapped me behind,
When I’ve crossed the line ahead!
That’s Why–I’m Proud To Be A Black Man!
Yeah, you may think that the enemy will win,
Better check your history agin’
We were the first to die in the Revolution,
Before that, built the Sphinx, created languages and higher math
Think I’m afraid of a little ‘rigged’ competition
Baby, don’t make me laugh!
When all is said and done,
I’ll be the one having the fun,
I come from the tallest of the Watusi
To the shortest of the Pygmy
No matter the tricks that are used
No matter how I may be abused
My face may be marred with blood, tears and sweat
But you haven’t gotten rid of me yet!
That’s Why–I’m Proud To Be A Black Man!

The Dr. Vibe Show: Live Tonight At 8 P.M. Eastern/5 P.M. Pacific – Seth Dolcy

1
Seth Dolcy
Seth Dolcy

Seth Dolcy is a Barbadian industrial arts teacher who is also a comics enthusiast, comic book collector, blogger and promoter of comics and graphic novels as worthwhile reading material. Additionally, Seth is the founder of the Facebook group ‘Comics Appreciation Team’, popularly known as C.A.T.

C.A.T. has been around for nearly 2 years and has a membership of approximately 230 comic aficionados from Barbados and around the world. C.A.T.’s mission statement is: “Reaching out to the masses to unite similar minds in the further appreciation of comicdom in its totality.” In this vein, C.A.T. promotes an in-depth understanding of comics and interest in reading. Themes, artwork, writers, plot and story-lines which all make comics exciting are discussed in the group forum. Moreover, C.A.T. explores the complexity of fictional characters, considering the diverse ways these characters impact people’s imagination and perhaps even their world view.

In addition to older comic enthusiasts, C.A.T. caters to teenagers through a reading club at the Princess Margaret Secondary School in Barbados called Club R.E.V.A.M.P. The acronym stands for Reading Engineered Via Artwork Meaning and Plot. This club was born of Seth’s concern that in this contemporary society, some children are unable to read, write and/or comprehend simple sentences because they are not interested in reading what is available to them. Club R.E.V.A.M.P uses comics to grab students’ attention, meeting them where they are and cultivating an appreciation for reading, while facilitating the development of comprehension and analytical skills. This venture has met with some success and appears quite promising.

Seth’s personal goal is to remove the stigma attached to comics by underscoring the various gains which can be accrued when comics are perceived as worthwhile reading material.

Seth will be live on our show tonight at 8 P.M. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific. Seth will be talking about comics through the years and their role as alternate reading materials and the elimination of the stereotyping of persons who read comics. He will also talk about his Facebook group (Comics Appreciation Team), why black people don’t read as much and the Reading Engineered Via Artwork Meaning and Plot (R.E.V.A.M.P.) reading club.

During our live interview, you have the opportunity to call in and share with us and ask questions via Skype. If you would like to do this, please call us at: doctorvibe42. If you get through, please be patient and we will get to your call as soon as possible.

The Dr. Vibe Show: Live Tonight At 9 P.M. Eastern/6 P.M. Pacific – Marie Roker-Jones Of “Raising Great Men”

Marie Roker-Jones

Marie Roker-Jones of Raising Great Men is on our show tonight live at 9 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Pacific.

Here is a little about Marie …

“I am married and the mom of two boys. Instead of Two and a Half Men, I’m living with One and 3/4 Men. (I’m bad at math). I like to think of myself as the black Liz Lemon (30 Rock). I’m nerdy, quirky and funny in my own mind. Thankfully, I have a teenage son to remind me I’m not that funny or cool. Growing up, I hung out with my brother and his friends and thankfully learned a lot about boys and men. As the D.W. in my brother’s life (for my Arthur fans), I began to realize that boys are deceptively simple.

I chose to start Raising Great Men a little over a year ago for two reasons: 1) I wanted to help other moms of boys navigate the challenges of raising boys and 2) I didn’t want my sons to grow and be like some of the guys my friends and I dated. I also wanted to share my experience as a woman who has been around boys and men for over 30 years. ( That may sound dirty unintentionally).

I am a guy’s girl. I enjoy watching sports and instead of chick flicks, I like Judd Apatow and Adam Sandler movies (Don’t judge me). I am a flawed Christian and a work in progress (but who isn’t?).

Anyway, I’m not just some random mom, below is my professional bio:

With more than 15 years experience and current history of providing training and development services with leading Fortune 500 companies, Marie Roker-Jones is a Certified Breakthrough Parenting® Instructor and Intrinsic Coach® in Health and Wellness. She has helped numerous moms of boys navigate the challenges of raising sons, especially the adolescent years. She is the Founder of Raising Great Men™-Real talk about raising boys to become men of character. Marie coaches moms to guide their sons as they journey from boyhood to manhood.

Marie is a graduate of Fordham University and has graduate certificates in Stress Management and Leadership. Marie has taught career development at Leham College and City College.

In addition, she has worked with students and parents in NYC public elementary, middle and high schools and has conducted workshops for: The Harlem Book Fair, The Westchester Children’s Book Festival, Harlem Children’s Zone Promise Academy, The New York City Charter School Center.

Her most requested workshops are:

Mom Language vs. Son Language-How to Talk So Your Son Will Listen

Brilliant But Lazy Series- How to Motivate Underachieving Boys

How to Raise a Gentleman in a Thug Culture

What Kind of Man Do You Want to Be?

Marie has created an online village of support for moms of boys through her mastermind groups, webinars, Raising Great Men™ BlogTalk Radio Show and #MomsofBoysChat on Twitter. Marie is passionate about creating a generation of compassionate, responsible and respectful men. She is fulfilling this legacy by giving moms the tools to help their sons create a road map for their future.”
