Growing up in Toronto, Kwame Damion Mason has always been surrounded by music; his parents exposed him to Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Heavy Metal, Disco and Jazz. His world changed when is older cousin one of the first female Dj’s and Mc’s introduced him to Rap music. From that day he was hooked and continued his appreciation for all music co writing the first single to Metal/Rap group Ragga Death’s single “Dance With The Devil” to being teased at the fact that he would blast songs from The Beatles through the two 12’ bass heavy speakers in his beloved Honda CRX.
In 1996 after the passing of his older brother Kwame realized life is too short and abandoned a potential position with the Toronto Police to pursue his dream of working in the entertainment industry. Hired on to host an independent television show called Phat Tv on CFMT (Toronto) Kwame got his first taste at interviewing up and coming artist. One in particular has always stood out. Sitting across from him in a plain red sweater Kwame was the first Canadian broadcaster to interview Sean Carter better known as Jay Z.
1999 rolled around with another opportunity, the newly formed Kiss 92 was looking for a mix show and Kwame fit right in with a fresh new on air style. For the next 12 years stations like Flow 93.5 (Toronto), Kiss 96.9 (Calgary), 91.5 The Beat (Kitchener), 91.7 the Bounce (Edmonton) would allow Kwame to travel across the country and be creative as only he can in different markets.
Radio has afforded Kwame with many opportunities to be apart of events like the Juno’s, The B.E.T Awards and the Much Music Awards. Interview countless celebrities like Beyonce, Rick Flair, Eminem, Alicia Keys to name a few. Working around the communities he has lived in is also a gift radio has brought to him being apart of fundraisers for the homeless and taking under privileged children to Disney World for a once and a lifetime experience.
Always working to reinvent who he is, Kwame’s focus on film and television will be another test that he is willing to take on. Working on his latest project SOUL ON ICE: PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE about the history and contributions of black athletes in the sport of hockey Kwame plans to use his love for hockey and Canadian history to once again make a difference.
Kwwame will be live on our show tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Pacific.
