Dr. Donald E. Grant Jr.

Dr. Grant is President and CEO of Mindful Training Solutions LLC, providing nationwide training and consultation services for universities, government entities and non-profit organizations. Dr. Grant also currently serves as the director of Pepperdine University’s Urban Fellowship Program and as adjunct professor of psychology in their Graduate School of Education and Psychology. Dr Grant previously served as a psychologist with Los Angeles County foster care youth as the county’s Department of Mental Health’s Child Welfare administrator for the countywide Intensive Treatment Foster Care program. Dr. Grant began providing direct clinical services to foster care youth and their families in the South Los Angeles, Compton and Lynwood areas after serving as Site Coordinator for a CalWORKS Homeless program in El Monte, CA in 2008. Dr. Grant holds a Bachelors of Science in Biology from Hampton University and a Doctorate of Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Los Angeles. As a former public school teacher, Dr. Grant maintains his passion for academia by teaching courses at several local universities. Dr. Grant’s primary
interests focus on the risk factors associated with multi-systemic marginalization of Black and Latino Americans while increasing awareness on mental health issues and disparities impacting the most vulnerable citizens of our country independent of ethnicity.

Janali Davis was born in Jamaica immigrating to Canada at the age of 1. As the daughter of teachers she grew up on two First Nations reservations in Saskatchewan. She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. Janali has been an independent IT consultant for the last 15 years and now runs her own IT staffing agency. Janali has been a Toastmaster for 6 years.

Alison Knibb joined Toastmasters in 2007. With a professional background in marketing and communications, Alison continues to enhance her presentation delivery for seminars and training, and to develop her persuasive skills for sales and marketing. She has served Toastmasters as VP PR/Marketing, VP Education and is currently the President of Ebony Toastmasters.

Nikki Johnson-Huston, Esq. is a well known attorney in Philadelphia. Previous to starting her own firm, Nikki spent 6 and 1/2 years as an Assistant City Solicitor in the Major Tax Unit representing the Department of Revenue in business tax litigation. During her time at the law department she handled hundreds of cases and litigated numerous appeals primarily in front of the Tax Review Board, the administrative board who hears appeals of tax liability. Nikki is now putting this extensive experience to use advocating for individuals and businesses to resolve their Philadelphia city tax issues.

Nikki is a 2004 graduate of Temple University Beasley School of Law where she earned a J.D./M.B.A./LL.M in Taxation at the same time in 4 years. Nikki is a member of the Board of Governors of the Philadelphia Bar Association, member of the Board of Trustees of Project H.O.M.E a charity that provides long-term permanent housing for the homeless and an in-demand motivational speaker.

Recently, we had Nikki on our show to talk about her article, What the Trayvon Martin Case Means for Middle Class Blacks . We were so fascinated to know about her life story that Nikki is back on our show live tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific to share her life story.

Nikki Johnson-Huston, Esq. is an tax attorney in Philadelphia with her own firm, The Law Office of Nikki Johnson-Huston and spent 6 ½ years as an Assistant City Solicitor in the Major Tax Unit for the City of Philadelphia Law Department. A 2004 graduate of Temple University Beasley School of Law, she earned a J.D./M.B.A/ LL.M in Taxation in four years. Nikki is a frequent speaker on how she overcame a life of poverty and homelessness to become an award winning young attorney. She is the former Co-Chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association Women in the Profession Committee, a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association Board of Governors, and former Co-Chair of the Women in the Profession Public Service Task Force of the Philadelphia Bar Association. Nikki used that position to start a mentoring program for high-school students interested in pursuing a career in law, conducted numerous panels about issues related to educational opportunities and the law and even co-moderated a fireside chat with Bill Cosby in November 2008. In addition, she has won several awards including the Craig M. Perry Community Service Award given by the Philadelphia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, been named a 2009 “Lawyer on the Fast Track” by the Legal Intelligencer, one of the “10 People under 40 to Watch in 2010” by The Philadelphia Tribune, a 2010 Philadelphia Business Journal Woman of Distinction, 2011 Next Generation of Leadership: Rising Star, 2nd Annual Fashioning Futures for Women Honoree by the Career Wardrobe, one of the 2012 Nation’s Best Advocates: 40 Lawyers Under 40 by The National Bar Association and a 2012 USA Eisenhower Fellow, where she traveled to India and New Zealand in September 2012 to work with women and children who were living in poverty. Nikki was recently appointed the Diversity Chair to the Philadelphia Bar Association and named a 2013 Pennsylvania Diverse Attorney of the Year by the Legal Intelligencer.

– Being homeless at the age of nine due to her mother’s drug and alcohol abuse and was sent to live with her grandmother which was a blessing
– Receiving a scholarship to St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia where she dropped out after her first year but went back and graduated four years later with her Bachelor’s Degree and then went to Temple University to get her law degree
– How her brother’s death three years ago heightened her concern for the disadvantaged

Glenn E. Martin, born and raised in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York.  He is the son of a retired police officer, brother of a federal correction officer and was formerly incarcerated himself. Today, Martin has risen to the role of Vice President of Development and Public Affairs and Director of the David Rothenberg Center for Public Policy at The Fortune Society, Inc., a social service and advocacy organization devoted to the successful reentry and reintegration of individuals with criminal histories. 

In his current role roles, Martin is responsible for developing and advancing Fortune’s criminal justice policy advocacy agenda and providing leadership over the agency’s Development and Communication Units.  After exiting prison in 2000, Martin began working at the Legal Action Center (LAC), eventually serving as the Co-Director of LAC’s National H.I.R.E. Network (HIRE), a national project dedicated to eliminating barriers to employment for jobseekers with criminal records. For Martin, his work is an authentic extension of his life.

In addition to testifying in from of Congress, the US Commission on Civil Rights and the US Senate, Martin has drafted and advanced major legislation to remove barriers to employment in six states, co-authored the Independent Committee on Reentry and Employment transition document for former NYS Governor Spitzer, and served as project manager on the largest audit study ever conducted in the US on race and criminal record based discrimination in low-wage labor markets. 

Additionally, Martin has written and advanced legislation and policy reform proposals in a number of states to remove barriers to housing, education and voting for formerly incarcerated people.  Specifically, Martin advocated to the US EEOC for the recently adopted US EEOC Title 7 Guidance on Jobseekers with Arrests and Conviction records.  In 2012, he served as keynote speaker at the Department of Justice’s Annual COPS Conference. 

Knowing both sides of the justice system has made Martin extremely well versed in the issues. Martin has appeared on several national news outlets, including CNN, MSNBC and CSPAN. He has also has served as an expert on local television and radio, contributing on the controversial issue of Stop and Frisk, as well as a number of other topics such as policing, alternatives to incarceration and reentry issues.  In addition to television appearances, Martin hosts a NYC- based cable television show, Both Sides of the Bars, where he engages criminal justice stakeholders and the local community in conversations about criminal justice reform. 

Mr. Martin is a former 2011-2012 Americas Leaders of Change National Urban Fellow and a member of the Board of the NY Foundation.   He also  currently serves on NYC Community Board #10, the NYC Council Task Force to End Gun Violence, NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s Ban the Box Advisory Board, Governor Cuomo’s Executive Work for Success Committee, NYS Executive Reentry Housing Committee, NYS Reentry Task Force, National Network for Safe Communities, the DCJS Service Provider Advisory Committee (SPAC), the Steering Committee of Reentry.net, the Correction Committee of the NYC Bar Association (adjunct), the Policy Committee of Interfaith Coalition of Advocates for Reentry and Employment (ICARE), the Employment Working Group of the NYC Discharge Planning Initiative, the Board of Directors of the College and Community Fellowship and a number of other boards and working groups addressing issues related to the reintegration of people with criminal records.
