“Painting a Different Picture”: Presented by The Zero Gun Violence Movement & NIA Centre for the Arts

The stories of gun violence in Toronto are often dominated by media images and representations that feature police, yellow tape, chalk markings and bullet casings, followed by a weeping parent who cannot explain what has happened to her child. This panel will paint a different picture, highlighting some the significant work being done across the city in the fight against gun violence and its residual effects.

On this final day of The Zero Gun Violence Movement’s 90-day summer campaign, we honour and celebrate the incredible commitment and effort of individuals and organizations engaging youth across the city who are affected by violence, in an effort to create a positive impact in our communities.

The “Painting a Different Picture” panel discussion will take place today at 4:30 p.m. during the 7th Annual Manifesto Of Community And Culture at George Brown College – Waterfront Campus
51 Dockside Drive in Toronto (Click on the link following for the location: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=51+Dockside+Drive,+Toronto,+ON,+Canada&hl=en&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=40.324283,56.513672&oq=51+dockside+drive+toronto&hnear=51+Dockside+Dr,+Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario+M5A,+Canada&t=m&z=16)

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Live Tonight At 8 P.M. Eastern/5 P.M. Pacific – Dario Vrbanek “Let’s Talk About Men – Documentary”

0
Dario Vrbanek
Dario Vrbanek

Don’t cry. Always be strong. Emotion is weak. Let’s Talk About Men is a tender and honest exploration of the mental health implications of men having to live within the “box” of masculinity. Pulling no punches, the film focuses on honest and frank discussion to uncover the pain that has been buried inside men’s consciousness for generations. With many men unaware of their own struggles, the documentary uses thoughtful discourse, hysterical dialogue and intimate moments to shine a fresh light on the experience of being a man. Mental health experts and “average Joes” combine to create a narrative that unearths the truth about men’s lives. Let’s Talk About Men does not simply skim the surface or offer criticism, rather, the film provides sincere insight into practical things we can do today, tomorrow, and for the rest of our lives to help men break out of the “box” of masculinity.

The director of Let’s Talk About Men, Dario Vrbanek, is an independent as an independent filmmaker gets. Dario has been working on Let Talk About Men for over two years and have spent thousands of dollars of my own money making it happen. The ENTIRE project has come out of his own pocket.

Dario will be on our show live tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific. He will talking about Let’s Talk About Men

Dr. Shonda Lackey completed a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at St. John’s University. She also earned an M.A. in psychology at Pace University and a B.A. in psychology at Skidmore College.

While at Pace University, Dr. Lackey conducted her Master’s thesis on the relationship between ethnicity, college settings, and students’ quality of campus life. Dr. Lackey’s doctoral dissertation focused on understanding barriers that affect interpersonal interactions between Blacks and Whites.

In addition to her research interests in multicultural issues, Dr. Lackey’s clinical interests include anxiety and mood disorders related to relationship, career/work, finance, and self-esteem issues. Dr. Lackey completed her doctoral internship in psychology at The Yale University School of Medicine and has completed additional clinical training at various sites including the St. John’s University Center for Psychological Services, Sunset Terrace Mental Health Center, and Weill Cornell/New York Presbyterian Hospital.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Live Tonight At 7:30 P.M. Eastern/4:30 P.M. Pacific – JD Vishus

0
JD Vishus
JD Vishus

JD Vishus has always had an uncanny ability to convey feelings and messages through poetry. So in 1986 he decided to marry this uncanny ability with his natural love for music. He Started a rap crew with some friends called SC Roc. The crew made a few demo tapes but never got anywhere. In 1987, JD decided to become a solo artist with Dj Marvel J backing him up. He started making a name for himself around Toronto, performing in many shows including the legendary Monster Jam series at the Concert Hall, 1987 and 1988.

In 1989, JD made his television debut on the Electric Circus. Between 1989 and 1994 JD continued making songs and shopped around for labels. Disillusioned by that endeavor as well as the state of Hip Hop at the time, JD started performing Spoken Word Poetry. Again, JD started to gain a name with a different crowd. In the coming years he performed in many venues around North America, all around Toronto, plus Detroit, Montreal, the Nuyorican Cafe in New York, and London, England.

In 1997, JD Vishus was featured on “Wordlife: Tales of the Underground Griots“, an excellent compilation of Canadian poets including Jemini and Dwayne Morgan. In 2003, JD won an “Open door pitch prize” at that year’s Innoversity Summit. The prize enabled JD to create a radio documentary for CBC radio’s Outfront show. The documentary was entitled “Would You Like Some Shepherd’s Pie With That Roti?” The piece was autobiographical and told completely in poetic form by JD. The show was aired in 2003, February 2004 and again in February of 2013. In 2004, JD had a near death experience. He suffered an asthma attack. From that time on he went into hyper mode establishing his sound and ensuring that his music got out to the largest amount of people. He completed his first album “Alleycat Sensibilities” in 2005 and thereafter established his website. JD continued to expand his sound. In 2013, he released his Mixtape entitled “Run Get This” coupled with a mini-film. Stay tuned as this mixtape may prove to be a door to the world, an exciting prelude to JD’s second album due out in late 2013, early 2014.
