Saladin Davis “Life 101 – Lessons From A 13 Year Old Father”

Saladin Davis is a professional motivator with a passion to assist the youth of America by breaking down all barriers blocking the road to their personal success. He looks to affect positive change in inner city/underprivileged communities by fueling the unrealized dreams of America’s youth. Saladin was born in Somerset, New Jersey in January 1984. He grew up with four older brothers who consequently became his paternal role models after the passing of his father in late 1990. Saladin was a talented athlete in his adolescence staring in Football and Track. When Saladin was in eighth grade his life took a drastic turn when he found out he was a father at the tender age of 13. This caused Saladin to grow up a little faster and different than most children his age. Though he was a teen father, his goals of playing college football and getting his degree never changed. In 2002 he was awarded a partial scholarship to play football at Stony Brook University where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies in 2007

While in school Saladin was consistently chosen to participate in forums and roundtable on various topics. Although these conventions were often recreational, they helped him identify his strengths as a public speaker. He had no anxiety in speaking to/with his peers. His ability to convey his point caught the eye of his athletic director who asked him to speak to a group of academically at risk athletes about the importance of turning their grades around. Academic revision was necessary to prevent them from expulsion and/or losing their athletic scholarships. Saladin became excited about the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others and began to reflect on whether this was something he could continue in his professional future. Though he was being called on to speak to many different groups, Saladin didn’t have a thought in his mind that this was what he was put on Earth to pursue.

Soon, out of curiosity and an innate desire to continue public speaking, Saladin joined Toastmasters International in Newark N.J. Through Toastmasters He was assured that he was an excellent speaker and his story could change lives. His speeches were so warmly received that he was asked to speak at the weekly meetings for his department of 600 employees. Saladin continued to sharpen his speaking skills within the workplace while in New Jersey and in January 2010 relocated to Charlotte. Joining the local Toastmasters club in Charlotte, he was convinced that he was put on this planet to motivate others. His goal is to encourage his audience to break down personal barriers and assist in leading them towards ultimate happiness. Saladin is passionate about helping others become solution oriented to reach their goals. His journey from a teen father to a full time single parent has incited his urge to assist those who are in situations similar to his. His target demographic is youth from the adolescent stage to collegiate years (i.e. sports teams, youth groups, and at risk teens). He aspires to not only motivate through powerful and passionate speeches, but to give them specific ways to work towards solutions. Saladin’s motto and favorite quote states, “the reason most people fail is because they give up what they want most for what they want at the moment”.

Saladin was born in Sommerset, New Jersey and the youngest of five boys. He went to college on a football scholarship. He worked at New York Life and the Bank of America. He moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in January 2012. Now, he is a full time speaker and author.

During our conversation, Saladin talks about:

– His father passing away when he was six years old and memories of his father
– How his mother stressed the importance of education
– Some of the challenges that he dealt with between six and thirteen years old
– The story behind him becoming a father at thirteen years old and his reaction, his mother’s reaction (who found out before he did), his brothers reaction
– How is mother and his aunt helped raise his daughter while he was going to school and college
– How he felt graduating from college and why it was important
– His experience in the business world and what made him become an entrepreneur
– The custody fight over his daughter
– The reasons why he wrote the book
– Did he ever feel like he wanted to quit writing the book?
– What did he feel like when he received the first finished copy of the book?
– The reaction to the book
– What is dream for his daughter
– What has he learned about himself while he was writing his book
– His words for Black men
– Does he have any regrets?
– If his father was still alive today, what would he say to him?
– The meaning of his first name

As part of its extended programme, on October 19, 2013, the African Theatre Ensemble presented an audience forum that provided an opportunity for dialogue around the issues and themes of the COMA. The stage production of COMA explores the dilemmas faced by a family coming to terms with End of Life and Palliative care for their loved one. This is a timely topic as it is being hotly debated in our Government, media, communities and homes. The event was sponsored by Radio Regent, and the The Dr. Vibe Show. The Audience Forum was presented as a free town-hall discussion with local and online communities. The Audience Forum featured a cross-section of perspectives on this hot button issue with a lineup of respected panelists that include Dora Award winner and Theatre Practitioner Rhoma Spencer, Playwright Jude Idada, Chief Pathologist Dr. Ola Kassimb, lawyer Davies Bagambiire, Imam Habeeb Alli, Rev. Dr Francis Mpindu, Rabbi Jordan Helfman and Mr. Michael AbduRashid Taylor. Hosted by Veteran Media Personality Tien Providence, Radio Hosts U-Sheak Koroma aka ‘Kokofele’ and Dr. Vibe, the COMA Audience Forum was presented in the COBA Studio at Daniels Spectrum in Toronto.

Black Male Engagement
Black Male Engagement

A Philly Drummer playing a Global Beat, Christopher A. Norris is an award-winning journalist, online content producer and professional drummer endorsed by TRX Cymbals. An American businessman, Norris currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Techbook Online Corporation, overseeing a strategic initiative of mobilizing local, regional, national and global communities by encouraging the production, safeguarding and dissemination of diversified contents in the media and global information networks.

Rashaun Williams and Isaiah Thomas served on an all-black-male panel last month in Philadelphia where the driving question was: “HOW do we engage culture to transform perception; hold media accountable for depictions that reinforce negative associations; and reset the vision of race for this and future generations?”

Both attempting to save the world – one through sustainability and the other through policy – Williams and Thomas represent 21st century thought-leaders who use their words to spread social change and leverage their actions for social impact.

Thomas, the youngest democratic City Council candidate in Philadelphia’s history, coaches an award-winning basketball league and serves as a mentor to countless youth – both in the league and in the community. With a new son and a young wife, Thomas is working tirelessly to ensure his family, friends and those in the city of brotherly love have a strong, reliable and hard-working elected official representing them in City Hall. Thomas has confirmed with Techbook Online his plans to campaign in the 2015 local election. Rashaun is DJ leads weekly classes with high-school aged youth, aiming to inform them of sustainable soil management practices and encourage the development of innovative, sustainable project-based learning activities.

The youngest BMe grantee in Philadelphia, Williams is sending sustainability through a culture-shock as he fuses animation, activism, technology, place-making and education into a future-proofed model called TechKnowledge G!™.

Neither Thomas nor Williams fit the narrative of what society says a young black man should be, but they do, however, fit the description. Regardless of their defining physical features, the two things that make these men such as threat turns out to be their greatest strength: young and black.

Both willing to work around the clock to “get the job done,” these brothers are a small window into the diversity of leadership that exist with BMe, a growing network of 3000+ inspired black men and their friends who everyday are working together to build strong communities.

Christopher, Rashaun and Isaiah will be live on our show today at 2:00 p.m. Eastern/11:00 a.m. Pacific.

At 2 p.m. Eastern/11 a.m. Pacific, Christopher will be discussing the highly controversial case of Tomayo McDuffy.

At 2:30 p.m. Eastern/11:30 a.m. Pacific, Rashaun Williams and Isaiah will be joining the conversation and will be talking with Christopher about “Building New Communities through Collaboration”. During this part of the conversation, Christopher will also be making a ground-breaking announcement regarding the future of Techbook Online Corporation.

During our live interview, you have the opportunity to call in and share with us and ask questions via Skype. If you would like to do this, please call us at: doctorvibe42. If you get through, please be patient and we will get to your call as soon as possible.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Michael Branch ” The Black Man’s Guide To Graduate School”

0
The Black Man's Guide To Graduate School
The Black Man’s Guide To Graduate School

The Black Man’s Guide To Graduate School is organized into nine chapters, with each chapter focusing on a different aspect of the graduate school process from making the decision to start to selecting mentors. Each of the authors provides a unique viewpoint; allowing readers to more fully connect with an individual authors story or path, while still being exposed to the range of views.

Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with Michael Branch, one of the authors of The Black Man’s Guide To Graduate School.

During our conversation, Michael talked about:

– Shares some of his background
