Fresh-off the conclusion of the regional competitions, 84 contestants will compete in Spelling Bee of Canada’s 27th annual Ontario championship finale for over $10,000 in cash prizes on Sunday, May 11 at the Eaton Chelsea in Toronto.

The Ontario championship finale promises to be a nail biting competition for spectators and contestants alike. Organizer Julie Spence observed the fierce level competition at the 28 regional spelling bees which hosted over 3,000 competitors, and concluded on Sunday, April 13.

“Participants have always dreaded the tie breaker round; which has contestants spell words that are not included in the official study manual. This was the first year I had seen competitors excited and cheering when the round was announced. They were prepared for a tough competition, and excited for a challenge. I have no doubt that this competitive spirit will carry through to the championship,” says Spence.

This year’s competition is open to the public to attend, and will be broadcast on Rogers TV cable 10/63 in Toronto/Scarborough. Viewers can expect to see children in the primary, secondary, and intermediate level spell words that will have them questioning how well they can spell. Spelling words like; magma, philanthropy, and electroencephalograph¬¬–words which won some contestants their coveted championship spot.

During our conversation, Julie talked about:

– What is the Spelling Bee Of Canada all about and history behind the event which she started from scratch in 1987
– Memories of the first Spelling Bee and how has it grown since
– The future for the Spelling Bee Of Canada

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Live Tonight At 9 P.M. Eastern/6 P.M. Pacific – Julie Spence “27th Annual Ontario Spelling Bee of Canada Championship”

27TH Annual Ontario Spelling Of Canada Championship - May 11, 2014 - Toronto, Ontario
27TH Annual Ontario Spelling Of Canada Championship – May 11, 2014 – Toronto, Ontario

Three Unique First Time Championship Competitors

This year’s competition also marks the opening of three new regional chapters; the Aga Khan Education Board, Khlasa School of British Columbia, and the Toronto Community Housing chapter. Each of these new chapters will have competitors in the Ontario championship for the first time, demonstrating the growing popularity of the Spelling Bee of Canada.

A former spelling bee contestant herself, Domonique Morris knows the invaluable experience being a contestant provides. She attributes her participation in the competition for helping not only enhance her vocabulary, and writing skills, but for developing her confidence, creativity and public speaking skills.

She wanted to extend these opportunities she had growing-up to the children in Toronto’s Community Housing.

“I wanted to provide an opportunity for the children living in Toronto Community Housing to compete, and demonstrate to the community that they defy the stigmas imposed upon them. The children know who they are outside of how they are perceived by others, but are rarely provided the opportunity to prove their skills. I saw first-hand at the regional competition how participating in a spelling bee inspired these children to break this imposed threshold, and how it built their confidence and skills.”

In 2002, Morris became the youngest Spelling Bee of Canada Co-Chapter President at 13 years old, opening the first North York chapter with the help of her mother, who served as Chapter President. After a hiatus, Morris, now 26, decided to return to the competition as a Chapter President, this time opening the first Toronto Community Housing chapter which saw 30 children compete at this year’s regional competition.

Morris described this regional competition as a highly competitive battle that had her on the edge of her seat. Next year she hopes to grow this chapter to 200 contestants from Toronto Community Housing throughout the GTA.

Spelling Bee of Canada has had over 50,000 children participate in the bee to date, and by 2020 the organization foresees increasing that number to a million, anticipating the launch of a national championship.

Julie Morris will be on our show live tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Pacific. She will be talking about the 27th Annual Ontario Spelling Bee of Canada Championship.

Break the Silence Campaign

More than 50 per cent of teenage girls in the Caribbean have been sexually abused; many by a family member. Karlyn Percil, a St. Lucian native who has been living in Toronto for the last decade was among them. She told her own story of child sexual abuse publicly for the first time last year on the OWN Canada TV show, Life Story Project. Since then she’s created the first sexual assault PSA for the Toronto Police Services and she is now an ambassador for UNICEF’s Break the Silence Campaign; a multi-pronged approach to end Child Sexual Abuse in the Caribbean. Through this platform she is championing a social media initiative seeking to get 500,000 pledges to end sexual abuse against women and children in the Caribbean and around the world. “A huge weight was lifted from my soul when I told my truth, and I want to encourage other women to face the elephant in their lives, whatever it might be,” says Percil.

UNICEF has put a focus on the Caribbean because the statistics are staggering. 40 per cent of children who are sexually abused are victimized by a parent or a step parent. And it’s estimated that 11,000 children under the age of 15 in the Caribbean are living with HIV/AIDS. Child sexual abuse is one of the main factors contributing to the spread of the disease among teenagers.

TAKE THE PLEDGE
This campaign runs from April 10th 2014 to April 10th 2015. It is targeted at Caribbean nationals living in their respective countries and who reside in North America or wherever they might be. When you sign the UNICEF online pledge you will receive the campaign’s icon; a tiny teddy bear with a band aid over its heart. The band aid will have your home country’s flag on it and you are encouraged to either post the image to your social media channels or change it to your profile picture. You will also be able to download a letter to email to your country’s consulate as well. The goal is to show authorities that people want change; they want the culture of silence to end.

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE
The campaign targets three areas; education, health and legal. In many Caribbean islands, the statute of limitations on sexual abuse is only 4 years; we want to see that eradicated so that any child can get justice no matter when they come forward. We also want mandatory reporting, so that if a teacher or anyone else in authority is told about a case of abuse, they have an obligation to report it to police. Police officers also need to be trained in how to speak to children who have been abused, with sensitivity. We also want protocols to be put in place that when a child reports their story once, they don’t have to repeat it over and over to other parts of the system, and be violated again.

WHY SPEAK OUT
“I really believe there is a strong link between child sexual abuse and mental health,” says Karlyn Percil. “And it doesn’t matter what culture, all ethnic groups have low reporting rates of abuse or sexual assault. There is still a stigma that makes everyone afraid to talk about it. There is also a connection between sexual violence against women and how much it costs the community. That silence keeps women in a constant cycle of depression. It prevents them from building healthy relationships and creating a strong foundation for a loving family and often causes them to miss work and to hold back on ‘leaning in’ at the workplace and pursing their dreams,” says Percil.

Vernette Eugene who is a member of the “Break The Silence Campaign” team will be on our show live tonight at 8:30 P.M. Eastern/5:30 p.m. Pacific.

News footage from the 2013 Stand Up Conference

Every young person deserves and has the ability to be successful. We know from data that young men of Colour are at risk of not meeting the Ontario Standard at grades 7 and 8. Only 40% of students born in the English-speaking Caribbean and 45% of students born in East Africa achieve or exceed the provincial standard in all four subjects in grades 7 and 8. These young men represent one of the largest groups of students at risk of failing the grade 10 literacy test and graduating from high school*. They can sometimes feel powerless to navigate the barriers to their success.
In response to the high number of young men of Colour underachieving in schools, The Toronto District School Board launched the inaugural Young Men Conference in May of 2010. The conference was a tremendous success!

For students, the conference provided a very special opportunity for synthesizing their learning, as well as meeting successful men of Colour and hearing directly from them about the challenges ahead and how through, hard work and education they can achieve their dreams. Students’ feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive and encouraging. Students left the day expressing optimism and hope for their futures and were able to visualize a path to success as outlined by the men at the conference.

The men who volunteered to spend the day with the youth at the conference demonstrated their commitment to reaching out into the community and providing leadership in fostering the social and intellectual development of young men of Colour.

As a result of the resounding success of all the prior conferences, we are doing it again for the 5th year! On Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at George Brown College, we will gather over 250 young men in Grades 7 and 8 from cross the TDSB (Toronto District School Board), to spend the day together learning, sharing and growing at this very special conference organized just for them.

The fifth annual Young Men’s Conference will provide its young male participants with the opportunity to engage with successful men of Colour from a variety of professions including business, sports, entertainment, medicine, politics, and so on. These professionals will share their personal stories of success and strategies for overcoming barriers. The hope is that the student participants will leave the day with a feeling of empowerment, responsibility and a desire to be successful!

We spoke with Hugh Lawson about the Stand Up Conference. During our conversation, Hugh talked about:

– His background and his experience with education
– director of Business Development in the Promotional Product Brand Merchandise Division
– The history of the Stand Up Conference
– What young men of color in grades 7 and 8 in Toronto are facing and they are telling him about their lives
– What needs to be done to help young men of color
– Some of his memories from the Stand Up Conference and how the conference has evolved
– The history behind the 100 Strong Academy
– What does he get out of the conference
– The theme for this kids and the men attending this year’s conference
