National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica – A Tribute to Rex – November 4, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. – Sony Centre For The Performing Arts – Toronto
The National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC) of Jamaica will cement its place as the Caribbean’s premier dance company on Novmeber 4 at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto.
This single-night performance will feature standout performances from NDTC’s repertoire, built on dance and shored up by remarkable music, costume and choreography. The Toronto audience will be favoured with a historical master class in dance, part retrospective, part reveal and part ode. This tour de force marks the closing of its stellar 52nd season.
The evening will highlight the much-anticipated *Tribute to Rex*. The late Ralston Milton “Rex” Nettleford, OM, FIJ, OCC, was the company’s co-founder, a public intellectual, an activist and a global citizen who died in 2010. The Toronto gathering will also feature the company’s seminal work, a program to include the *Súlkari* (1980), an elaborate, Yoruba-inspired “dance of exaltation.” This introspective of the ever complicated male-female relationship is a fusion of artistic forms choreographed by Eduardo Rivero-Walker, featuring Marlon Simms, now NDTCs associate artistic director.
*Súlkari* is accompanied by the bold, uber-contemporary ,Urban Fissuregram to include the S ̈elease know or should know who he is?e and choreography.?] *Urban Fissure* (2004), featuring the music of the legendary Bob Marley, Eryka Badu and a Rastaman Chant with Busta Rhymes. In the 2010 work *Minutes and Seconds*, the stealth of choreographers Kerry-Ann Henry and Momo Sanno is a reminder that life, though complicated, demands respect and reflection for the “simple yet powerful things God has created.” And for the company’s devotees, the much lauded Nettleford masterpiece, *Dialogue For Three *(1963)—a true
feminist libretto, and tense tale of three—is a classic tutorial in male struggle and helplessness “in the face of female force.”
Artistic director, visionary and technician artist Barry Moncrieffe says, “The season promises to be a rewarding and uplifting experience for audience members.” Moncrieffe, committed to legacy building, is creatively governed by the company’s core values of “exploration, experimentation, renewal and continuity,” a formula that has made NDTC ” Alvin Ailey’s Diasporic twin and a revolutionary creative force in modern dance.”

Ross McKenzieBIPOLARIZED – RETHINKING MENTAL ILLNESS
Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Ross McKenzie’s psychiatrist told him he would live with the disorder for the rest of his life and that he would have to take lithium to control symptoms. To Ross, taking the drug daily felt like a chemical lobotomy, leaving him in a foggy, drug-induced haze. Ross ultimately decided to resolve his symptoms outside of conventional medicine. He progressively reduced his use of the psychotropic drug lithium, at an experimental clinic in Costa Rica. What ensued was a self-exploration into alternative treatments to treat his condition and a journey delving into the root cause of his mental breakdown.
BIPOLARIZED – RETHINKING MENTAL ILLNESS uses Ross’s personal experiences to tell a larger story about medication. It will reveal how we are labelling more and more people with mental illnesses and how, in tandem, we are prescribing more and more toxic psychotropic drugs to treat these illnesses.
The film weaves together a series of interviews with activists, psychiatrists and other psychiatric survivors who have challenged the status quo as well as recount some of the alternative therapies Ross uses to maintain his mental, emotional and physical health.
His journey is raw, gripping, and heartfelt. Ross is now healthy, and free from the toxic side effects of psychotropic drugs. But most importantly, he has discovered a way to reclaim his life, and that revelation is the driving force that has led him to share his compelling story.
During our conversation, Ross talked about:
– Some of his background
– Some of his journey of twenty years battling and overcoming biopolar disorder including his family’s support
– Some parts of the film
– Why did he hold his emotions inside of him for a long period of time
– His experience going to a shaman and a special moment about his father during this experience
– The moment he decided to quit seeing a psychiatrist and quit using medication cold turkey
– Some of his concerns about the North American medical system
– The story behind the making of the documentary
– His message for men who don’t want to deal with health challenges
– What has this experience taught him
You can catch BIPOLARIZED – RETHINKING MENTAL ILLNESS 8 p.m. Eastern this Saturday (November 1, 2014) on the Global Television Network in Canada.
