The Dr. Vibe Show™: Lawrence A. Rasheed “The Pathologies, Plight And Profits Associated Black Males”

0
Lawrence A. Rasheed
Lawrence A. Rasheed

Over the past 20 plus years Mr. Rasheed has worked as an educator in various levels of teaching and administration. His educational experiences includes the elementary, middle, and high school levels. His proclivity to assist African American males led him to become the founder of R.A.A.M.P. (Reaching African American Male’s Potential). The program was founded in 1993 and implemented it in several schools in the San Diego Unified School District. R.A.A.M.P. was implemented in Antioch Middle School in 2007-2008. Subsequently, R.A.A.M.P. Charter Academy emerged. It was originally intended to be a single-gender school for African American males. However, unfortunately that did not come to fruition. Thus, R.A.A.M.P. became (Raising Academic Achievement Multi-Cultural Program) Charter Academy; which he co-founded.

Mr. Rasheed now continues his passion and calling to ameliorate our African American males, symbiotically conveying and championing positive perception of their social, academical, and personal accomplishments until it becomes customary and expected! P.O.W.E.R. (Providing (W)holistic Educational Resources) Consulting and G.R.I.O.T. (Greatness Rediscovered In Our Time) Mentoring gestalt, both serve as a conduit to continue Mr. Rasheed’s role in the “village” of altruistically affirming and assisting African American males. He also teaches 7th and 8th grade “Life by way of English Language Arts” and mentors teachers at Synergy Charter School in Pittsburg, CA.

Mr. Rasheed received his Bachelor’s degree in English from the HBCU- The University of Arkansas in Pine Bluff; teaching credentials from The Fortune School of Education; A Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from The University of the Pacific; Administrative credentials, and currently is an Educational Administration and Leadership doctoral candidate at The University of the Pacific.

Mr. Rasheed has received the award for Outstanding Graduate Administrative student- 2011-2012. He was awarded Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers 2005-2006 and was nominated once again for the 2006 – 2007 school year. He received the Man of Merit Award in 2007. In addition, he has been recognized by the City of Antioch in 2009 and Contra Costa County Supervisor Federal Glover in 2007 and 2008.HH Administrative Graduate Student.

Mr. Rasheed is associated with several community, civic, fraternal, and professional organizations: National Association for the Advancement for Colored People (NAACP); National Council Teachers of English (NCTE); California Alliance of African American Educators (CAAAE); The Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color (COSEBOC); American Educational Research Association (AERA), and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

“Freire mentioned that we must stop banking education. He said instead of making educational deposits, we must start planting seeds and cultivate them so they can grow. By the looks of this current epidemic on African American male students, those plants have metamorphosed to trees; those trees are now growing some Strange Fruit- with blood on the leaves and blood on the root.” Mr. Lawrence A. Rasheed

During our conversation, Mr. Rasheed talked about:

– Some background of himself and life being raised Muslim
– The mentorship his parents gave him
– Where did his passion to help young African American men
– Some of the misconceptions and falsehoods associated with African American men
– His concerns about some of the programs that are in place to help African American males
– What does Black America need to do in helping African American men?
– How has life changed for African American males during his life
– The changes needed with the American education and justice system
