Warren Farrell’s team to propose a White House Council on Boys and Men spent April 24, 2015 in Des Moines Iowa at the caucuses for the presidential primaries. In the morning, Dick Woods and Warren Farrell were on a radio show and Dick interviewed Warren at the Iowa legislature. The team had lunch with Rick Perry’s Iowa campaign manager, Andy Swanson, and discussed a wide range of topics affecting boys, men, the economy, and the ability to reduce the size of government by addressing issues like the oversized prison system and high cost of welfare due to father absence.

In March 2009, President Obama signed an Executive Order creating the White House Council on Women and Girls. “The purpose of this Council is to ensure that American women and girls are treated fairly in all matters of public policy,” said President Obama. Today, Dr. Warren Farrell is leading the charge of a new proposal, to create a Proposal For A White House Council On Men And Boys.

Warren Farrell, Steve Anderson, Steve Brulé, Dan Gorbunow, Molly K. Olson and Cameron Ljungkall will be sharing about their experiences from the Iowa Caucus live tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific. The show will hosted by Glenn Barker, Dr. Marvin Thompson and Dr. Vibe.

History Of The Harry Jerome Awards:

On October 21, 1982, a meeting was held where a decision was made to form an association and a steering committee including Al Hamilton, publisher of Contrast Newspaper, Denham Jolly and Bromley Armstrong. Incorporated in July 1983, the Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA) is a non-profit charitable organization that serves to address equity and opportunity for the Black community in business, employment, education and economic development. Following the October 1982 meeting, it was decided to honour the six Black Canadian athletes who excelled at that year’s Commonwealth Games: Angela Taylor-Issanjenko, Ben Johnson, Mark McKoy, Milt Ottey, Tony Sharpe and Desai Williams.

A dinner was suggested at which Harry Jerome, Canada’s premiere track and field athlete of the 1960s would be invited to be the keynote speaker. However, before he could be invited, Harry Jerome died suddenly in December 1982. The group then decided to turn the celebration into a tribute to Harry Jerome and an awards ceremony to honour the six athletes. The name “Harry Jerome Awards” was proposed by Hamlin Grange and so the first Harry Jerome Awards was held on March 5, 1983.

The Harry Jerome Awards is now a national event that recognizes and honours excellence in African Canadian achievement. In addition to the Harry Jerome Awards, the BBPA sponsors the Harry Jerome Scholarship Fund, providing financial support to African Canadian youth pursuing higher education. The idea for the Harry Jerome Scholarship Fund was provided by Hamlin Grange and realized through the efforts of Kamala-Jean Gopie, Pamela Appelt, Sheila Simpson and Beverly Mascoll. Journalist Cynthia Reyes was the BBPA’s president at the time. Under the leadership of Verlyn Francis, in 1996 the scholarship fund established an endowment fund and attracted corporate sponsorship. Today the Fund awards some thirty scholarships each year.

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Live Tonight At 7 P.M. Eastern/4 p.m. Pacific – Shontelle Dubois

Shontelle Dubois
Shontelle Dubois
"Wide Awake" April 25, 2015 At 60 Winges Road
“Wide Awake” April 25, 2015 At 60 Winges Road

Shontelle Dubois grew up in a rough troubled single parent household. Confidence, self esteem and courage were characteristics that she lacked because of the many problems going on in the household.

Chantelle had her daughter, prematurely, at 25 years old and her relationship with her father fell apart shortly after she was born. Due to her premature labor, her daughter needed to be fed from a straw for months and her eye muscles were weak causing her to now be 1 point away from being legally blind.

Not a single parent, but a single woman raising my daughter and working 2 jobs made things seem impossible for Shontelle to manage on some days. She experienced a lot of anxiety and stress during these years and was continuously hiding behind a smile so others would not chime in on my struggles.

In September 2009, Shontelle was in a terrible car accident that left her unconscious at the scene and in the hospital. Consequently, she was prescribed heavy medications that she had to take with food every 3 hours. She was not mobile and she weighed 203 pounds, the heaviest she had ever been.

In January 2014, Shontelle decided to make a difference. She lost 63 pounds in 4 1/2 months. One month later, she became a sold out trainer and two months after that I became the co-owner with my partner Nana Valentine of our fitness studio called Road 2 Glory Fitness Studio.

Shontelle’s journey took a total of 8 months between losing 63 pounds, training others and operating my own studio. She is now inspiring others to fight through any problems they have and to take their health more serious. Recently, Shontelle has been doing motivational speaking in schools and appearing on radio talkshows.

On April 25, 2015 2 p.m at 60 Winges Road in Vaughan, Ontario, Shontelle is hosting an event called “Wide Awake’- discover the reality of your true self. The aim for this event is to bring awareness to ourselves of how we can sometimes hold ourselves back from our own success. She would like every person to leave my event feeling empowered and hopeful about their future. Successful business speaker, Carlton Brown, will be explaining how to maximize the growth of your business and explain what is needed to succeed in our business ventures. Travis Blackman will be doing spoken word to motivate us all and Shontelle will have a fashion show of some of my weight loss/ body transformation clients celebrating their hard work and determination.

Khalil A. Cumberbatch

Khalil A. Cumberbatch is a formerly incarcerated advocate for social justice movements within the NYC area. He has worked within the reentry community in NYC since 2010 when he was released after serving almost seven years in the NYS prison system. Since his release,Khalil has worked with various non-profits as a service provider, policy analytic, advisor, board member, collaborator, and consultant.

Khalil graduated from CUNY Lehman College’s MSW program in May 2014 where he was awarded the Urban Justice Award for his work with underserved and marginalized communities that are negatively impacted by not only mass incarceration, but also high poverty and unemployment rates, lack of access to quality education, and other ineffective social “safety nets.”

Khalil currently serves as Policy Associate for the Legal Action Center, the only non-profit law-and-policy organization in the United States whose sole mission is to fight discrimination against people with histories of addiction, HIV/AIDS, or criminal records, and to advocate for sound public policies in these areas.

The percentage of black men in poor health outnumbers that of their peers in other ethnic backgrounds. There is a high prevalence of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes among black men in Ontario. These are preventable chronic conditions that can be addressed through regular physical activity and healthier eating habits.

Recently, the Taibu Community Health Centre held a Black Men’s Heath Challenge.

The goal of the Black Men’s Health Challenge was to provide a culturally specific lifestyle intervention program to help black men engage in behaviors necessary to address what is or can over time become debilitating diseases.

The program was held once a week for two hours over a nine week period.

The first hour of each session had a nutritionist, dietician, doctor or specialist provide nutrition or healthy lifestyle information that is culturally appropriate.

The second hour of each session had the men participate in physical activity session with a personal trainer in a gym setting. The structure of the program was for the men to work both independently, in partners and as a group.

Some of the topics that were discussed were: diabetes prevention, communication, dealing with relationships, sleep apnea, healthy eating, healthy meal planning, high blood pressure and prostate/sexual Health.

During our conversation, Roxanne talked about:

– Some background on herself including the story behind her recent career change
– Where did her passion from health come from
– What Taibu Community Health Centre is all about and how she got a job there
– The story behind the Black Men’s Health Challenge and why she is so passionate about it
