Perception Of Complexion

The Perception of Complexion campaign is a means to directly and artistically respond to the undermining bigotry that minorities and people of color face in our society.

EJ Brown, Christian Moore and Zachary Grant of the Perception of Complexion campaign were recently on our show.

Ej Brown

25-year-old artist, Ej Brown, is a Baltimore, Maryland native and did most of his growing up in the small town of Hanover, PA. He’s a recent college grad from Point Park University (located in Downtown Pittsburgh, PA) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Cinema Production. From Trayvon Martin to Freddie Grey, over the past two years Brown has observed the increasing problem surrounding police brutality and the overall undermining bigotry that people of color face in the US. As a direct response of the growing frustration of not being heard and understand Brown launched the “Perception of Complexion” campaign on Tumblr and revealed a series of photos titled ‘The Mugshot Series’, which depicted mugshots of young black college grads in cap and gown. The project and campaign as since gone viral and the movement continues to grow.

Christian Moore

Christian L. Moore is a native of Vineland, NJ. He attends Point Park University where he is a senior Business Management major, concentrating in Marketing. He also serves as the university’s Black Student Union President. Christian’s dream is to redefine the image of African American men by combining his love for Christ and passion for business to bridge the societal gaps in America. Teaming up Ej Brown for Perception of Complexion has allowed him to do so globally. As Perception of Complexion’s Marketing director, Christian aims to help Ej communicate this movement beyond the camera lens.

Zachary Glenn

Zachary Glenn Grant, is a writer/actor from McKeesport, (Pittsburgh) Pennsylvania. He graduated from Point Park University last year with a liberal studies degree; focusing in Philosophy. He also has comitted himself to seeking equality within America as well as following his dreams within the film industry. Whilst helping Ej accomplish his ideas for the Perception of Complexion project, Zachary went to France for The Creative Minds Mind Group opportunities during the Festival de Cannes. Ironically, he was first introduced to the project’s success in France, where many people noticed him from Twitter.

During our conversation, they talked about:

– A little about themselves including how they met
– How has the perception of being a young Black man in America impacted their lives
– How EJ started the campaign and what Lawrence and zachary’s reaction when EJ presented the campaign to them
– Their parents reaction to the campaign and others reactions
– How the campaign changed them and their thoughts about America thoughts about black men at this time
– Their thoughts on the relationships between young black men and older blacks at this time
– Some of the biggest challenges that young African American men are facing and their immediate future
– The future of the campaign
