The Dr. Vibe Show - Info For Black Men And Those Who Love Them

Techbook Online Corporation, a news and event company headquartered in Philadelphia, and The Dr. Vibe Show™, an international media platform for black men and those that love them, aired a special live broadcast last Saturday 1 p.m. EST entitled #SayNoToSuicide.

The online forum, which was heard live at The Dr. Vibe Show™ was inspired by the suicide deaths of Mr. Anthony Riley, a Philadelphia street singer who appeared on NBC’s The Voice, and Mr. Kalief Browder, a New Yorker in his early 20s who was wrongfully convicted and jailed for an alleged robbery of a book-bag.

“I’m proud to join this panel because I want to dismantle the silence and stigma of depression and suicide among people of color,” said Mr. Richard Taylor, a Chicagoan, suicide survivor, author of “Between the Dream,” and one of the three panelists for the #SayNoToSuicide live broadcast.

The other panelists included Ms. Sarah Ashley Andrews, founder of Dare to Hope, a Philadelphia-based suicide prevention; and Ms. Felicia Roche, a member of Techbook Online’s Board of Leaders and Doers who recently penned a lengthy article about her challenges with Dissociative Disorder and suicide.

Some of the topics that were discussed by the panel were:

Why don’t people say no to suicide?

Why should people say yes to life?

Why is suicide perceived as a “white thing?”

How can one be an ally to a suicidal person?

The show also featured:

– An interview with Mr. Malcolm Burnley, author of “The Voice,” the featured article about Mr. Anthony Riley’s suicide death in Philadelphia Magazine’s August issue
– An interview with Dr. H Jean Wright, Psy.D, from the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disability Services.

According to a 2009 National Institutes of Health study:

“Suicide is the third leading cause of death in all teens in the United States. Historically, black teens and young adults have lower suicide rates than white teens, but in recent decades, the suicide rate for black youth has increased dramatically.”

Techbook Online‘s CEO, Mr. Christopher “Flood the Drummer®” Norris, who stars in #TheWeekThatWas – a news segment aired every Friday evening during the 6 o’clock hour on 900amWURD (PHL radio) or 900amWURD.com (streaming live) – will moderate the #SayNoToSuicide broadcast.

Mr. Norris, prior to announcing the #SayNoToSuicide movement, brokered a relationship with the City of Philadelphia and Comcast in order to make digital content from the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services mental health more accessible to Philadelphians.

Techbook Online has history of working in the best interest of our readers and those who live in the communities in which we operate,” said Mr. Norris, who earlier this year was named a #PhillyChanger by Generocity.com, the platform for social good in Philadelphia. “Whether it’s fatal police violence, a lack of civic engagement, or an increase in suicide rates, we will aim to use our unmatched publishing capabilities to raise awareness of preventive measures; inform our audiences of resources that’ll increase their quality of life; and connect communities through content in an effort to accelerate collaboration and innovation.”

On last month’s edition of Dr. Vibe’s Allies, Victory Unlimited, Clive Henry, Jonathan Shaw, Khalil Cumberbatch, Teresa Hodge and Donna Hylton discussed With Racism On The Rise: Can Black Men and Black Women Really Afford To Be Divided Today?.

Here were the conversation pieces:

· Are Black men and women divided today? And if so, why do you think that is?

· What impact has the divide between Black men and black women affected the Black community?

· Is it true that Black Men and Black Women were more unified in the past? And if so, why do you think that was?

· Why does it seem that other ethnic groups have an easier time “sticking together” than Black people do?

· How has the divide between Black men and women:

– Impacted Blacks financially?

– Impacted Blacks socially?

– Impacted Blacks in the job market and in corporate America as a whole?

· With Black men and Black women already being killed by both police and criminals these days without repercussions, what do you think it’ll take for black men and black women to get justice in America?

· What do you think that Black Men and Black Women can do today, and in the future, to become more unified?
