A few weeks ago, we did a live Black men’s roundtable where we discussed, “Has Being A Man Gone Out Of Style Today?” We had some challenges with the broadcast so we are going to start the discussion again on this subject.

Joining live tonight to discuss “Has Being A Man Gone Out Of Style Today? Part One” are syndicated writer Mike Ramey and Victory Unlimited of The Victory Unlimited Show , Henri Morris and The Style Gent (@TheStyleGent, The Transformed Male) tonight for our monthly “Dr. Vibe’s Allies Roundtable” at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST.

During our live chat tonight we will discuss on these issues:

The definition of a man: What was it then, and what is it now?

What has replaced manhood as the goal for young black boys today?

What were some of the rites of passage that were used in the past to
help boys become men? Do we still observe any of them today?

You don’t want to miss it!! The “Dr. Vibe’s Allies Roundtables” is good stuff!!

The Dr. Vibe Show™: Live Tonight At 9 P.M. Eastern/6 P.M. Pacific – D. Channsin Berry ““The Black Line” profile of the African-American Women-Part 3 A Journey of Passion, Truth, and Race.”

"The Black Line" profile of the African-American Women-Part 3 A Journey of Passion Truth and Race.
“The Black Line” profile of the African-American Women-Part 3 A Journey of Passion Truth and Race.

Filmmaker, D. Channsin Berry says that it was a divine calling which prompted him to create the documentary series, “The Black Line”. (A Profile of the African-American Woman) Part 3. The 75 minute documentary features a broad spectrum of other African-American women.

The Black Line, appropriately titled, is a film that provides insight into some of the thoughts, practices, and feelings of some African-American women, revealing a consistent thread distinguishing them from women of other ethnicities. The documentary highlights shared truths and experiences touching each of the featured participants regardless of their socio-economic standing. Berry painstakingly probes the commonality among his subjects, crossing regions, religions, sexualities, and professions.

The Black Line-Part 3 delves into the reasons why some younger African-American women may, according to their elders, be the way they are today. Through dialogue with distinguished women, possible solutions to the young black women’s dilemma come to fore. From voices and memories of these women, Berry explores the African-American women’ survival and destiny from the 1920’s to the present. Using the various institutions of marriage, mothering, racism, careers, education, religion, and sex, he guides the viewer through a journey of exploration and discovery of the history and future of African-Americans as a people.

Mr. Berry is the Founder of the D. Channsin Berry Foundation, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to raise funds for LUPUS awareness.

Mr. Berry will be live on our show tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Pacific. He will be talking about a number of subjects including his latest project, “The Black Line”. (A Profile of the African-American Woman) Part 3.

During our live conversation, you have the opportunity to call in and share with us and ask questions via Skype. If you would like to do this, please call us at: doctorvibe42. If you get through, please be patient and we will get to your call as soon as possible.

The Dr. Vibe Show: Live Broadcasting At Various Times Today During The Stand Up Young Mens Conference

0

Reaching Young Black Boys

It is estimated that 40% of Black Youth drop out from the TDSB’s highschool system, ultimately failing to graduate. Although efforts have been made to stem the tide of these crises, there has been no appreciable decrease. The reasons for this disengagement are far and wide, from me poverty, crime, home and community environments and the lack of positive male role models. (stats/data)

In response to the high number of young men of colour underachieving in public schools, the Toronto District School Board launched the Stand Up Young Men Of Colour Conference series in 2010. On a beautiful day in April, The CPO hosted 300 young men of colour in Grades 7 and 8 (12-13 year olds) along with 50 adult guest speakers from a variety of fields, including business, medicine, sports, entertainment. Together, the young boys, from eight of Toronto’s downtown public schools, spent the day learning, sharing and growing at this very special conference organized just for them. Successful local professionals from all walks of life shared their personal stories of success and strategies for overcoming barriers to create a sense of confidence and empowerment for participants to see the long term value of schooling. The following year, The CPO hosted the second annual conference, titled The Stand Up Young Men Of Colour Conference: Changing The Colour of Success. Some of the presenters included:

The following year, The CPO hosted the second annual conference, titled, Stand Up: Changing The Colour of Success. Some of the presenters included:

Mark Beckles Vice President, Royal Bank of Canada
Marlon Reid, Vice President at TD Securities
Neil Le Grand, Trez Capital Financial Analyst
Dwayne Morgan, Spoken Word Artist
Courtney Charles, Toronto Raptors’ Basketball Operations Coordinator
Chris Spence, TDSB Director of Education
Cabral Richards, Television personality from The Marilyn Denis Show
Dwight Drummond, CBC TV news anchor

These young men represent one of the largest groups of students at risk of failing the grade 10 literacy test and graduating from high school. For students, the conference provides a very special opportunity for synthesizing their learning, to meet successful men of colour and hear directly from them about the challenges ahead and how through hard work and education they can achieve their dreams.

The success and impact of the annual Stand Up Conference cannot be underestimated. The conference has touched the lives of several hundred grade 7 and 8 boys, invigorating their desire and drive to learn, with confidence and hope of achieving a high school education. The psycho-social, and emotional impact of modeling success, is a cornerstone to the Stand Up Conference. However, there is a growing belief by all parties concerned that more can be done to sustain the success beyond the annual conference, and to groom personal capacity, teach skills and yield a greater impact in the lives of these youth. It is for this reason and more that Stand Up will be redesigned under a program continuum that engages the students at the beginning of their senior year in middle school through the winter, spring and culminating in the summer; the end of their middle school year.

Upon completion of the program, the participants will be eligible to participate with another community youth mentoring program geared for youth in High school, such as The Canadian Multicultural L.E.A.D. Organization. LEAD and other such organizations will be partnered with to ensure the fluid, continuity and transition of eligible Stand Up participants in their program.

Through this partnership with a youth mentoring organization, the TDSB is in a position to transition away from the primary partner role of delivery to that of a secondary role of facilitator of Stand Up.

For the second year in a row, The Vibe and Vegas Show are blessed and pleased to be doing live broadcasting throughout the day during the Stand Up Young Mens Conference. Dave Ferguson is the Host /Producer of the popular weekly sports radio show: BEYONDtheCheers – “Conversations inside and outside the world of sports and athletics.” BEYONDtheCheers airs live weekly on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Eastern time.
