The Dr.Vibe Show: Live At 9 P.M. – Lilia Esi Of "The Manhood Mentorship Initiative (Toronto)"

0

Tonight, live at 9 p.m. eastern time, we will be speaking and sharing with Lilia Esi of The Manhood Initiative.

The Manhood Mentorship Initiative mission statement is “Helping black boys transition into manhood”.

The Manhood Mentorship Initiative is a Toronto based organization that provides young Black males with access and interaction with adult role models who assist to provide the tools to help them develop positive thinking, responsible personal conduct, respect for self and others, educational achievement, cultural enrichment, social networks and positive male identity.

Through deliberate and structured group sessions with committed and conscientious adult mentors & role models, young men will develop the strength and confidence to face life’s challenges head on.

THE CHALLENGE:

Black boys are growing up without father figures and positive Black role models or mentors.
Black youth have a have higher rates of suspension, expulsion, placement in special education, and dropout than other groups. Unfortunately, Black youth confront high unemployment and low labor force participation rates, and high probation and incarceration rates. A combination of social, historical and socio-economic factors can impede and cripple the Black male’s ability to truly transition into manhood. He is left to constantly struggle and fight for an identity, for power, for respect, and for understanding of who he is verses what he is projected as.

“My mom does what she can, but she can’t do everything. It’s not her fault, She can’t teach me how to be a man.”
Black male youth @ African Rites of Passage Youth Retreat – November 2011

THE INITIATIVE “Part of the solution”:

BLACK MALE MANHOOD MENTORSHIP GROUP SESSIONS:
• Frank and interactive facilitated group manhood sessions
• 3 hours per month
• Group Setting
• A selection of Black adult men from a variety of professions and life experiences
• Meeting with Black Youth from a pre-existing community based programs
• Black male adults are provided with context, support and training
• Interaction to mentees are limited to monthly group sessions
• Social Media is used as a tool for: recruit adult males; keep mentors and mentees connected; pass on relevant reading materials, videos; document progress

This initiative gives Black men the opportunity to step up to be mentors and role models to younger Black men who lack positive male influences in their lives.

As a result young men will:
• Cultivate stronger links with positive male role models and mentors.
• Increase confidence and self-esteem.
• Improve strength in mind to increase confidence and success.
• Develop strong male identity.

The Dr.Vibe Show: Kenya Williams … A Discussion About Molestation

2

Kenya Williams

Our first of our regular monthly guests is Kenya Williams. Kenya was born and raised in California. Kenya is the oldest of seven children raised by a single mother and is the mother of one daughter. She is a high school graduate and spent time in the military and the Air Force. Kenya is the owner of two successful businesses.

During our first monthly conversation, we discuss the issue of molestation. The topics range from why Kenya wanted to discuss about this subject, why the Black community needs to discuss this issue that affects Black women and men, her experience and the experiences she has heard from others, how she was molested by five different people between ages of nine and fourteen and how it was “swept under the rug” by her mother, her years of suppression and how she handled seeing the family friend who molested her and it was a breakthrough and forgiveness moment.

We then discuss how has these events shaped her opinion of men,
how sharing this with her daughter has strengthened their relationship, why are we not talking and acting against molestation,
What does the Black community needs to do about this issue? and Is the Black church doing enough to address this issue?

Kenya ends the show with her message for those who have been molested and for those who committed molestation who have not admitted their act.

The Dr.Vibe Show: Live Tonight At 9 P.M. EST – Faydra Deon Of SolaPress

0

Faydra Deon

Before SolaPress there was Sola Mente Publishing.

Faydra Deon started Sola Mente Publishing, because she decided that she wanted her own publishing company for publishing her own books.

Faydra doesn’t think any one person, or even a team of people, should get to decide what hundreds, thousands, millions of people should and shouldn’t read.

Once she went through the trial-and-error process of publishing her own books in electronic and printed formats, Faydra decided that she wanted to help others publish their books at a reasonable price and without having to forfeit a majority of their earnings to a publisher, especially when it’s the authors who do most of the hard work; creating the content.

SolaPress’ mission is simple…

SolaPress helps you get published, and the readers decide what they like.

SolaPress refuses to help anyone publish any work that it finds to be plagiarized and/or that is available in the public domain. SolaPress also will not help anyone publish content that is illegal, unethical and/or immoral. SolaPress respect your right to freedom of expression, but that kind of content will not be made available on SolaPress.”

During the interview, Faydra will be talking about why she started a publishing company and what it takes to get a book published.
