The Dr. Vibe Show: Live Tomorrow At 11 A.M. EST – Murphy Browne “White-Washing Anti-Black Racism”

Murphy Browne has been on the front lines on issues of racism in her neighbourhood of St. James Town and in the schools where she worked. She was a part-time instructor and historian in the African Heritage /Black Cultural Program of the Toronto District School Board for more than 20 years, a facilitator in the African Studies Program of the Free University of Toronto Program and a diversity trainer for the Girl Guides of Canada. She has been active in the Organization of Parents of Black Children, the Black Action Defence Committee, and the African Theatre Ensemble. Murphy served on the board of directors of Central Neighbourhood House where she chaired the anti-racism/anti-oppression committee and the Human Resources Committee and was President of the Board of Directors. She was a union activist as a member of CUPE 4400 and served on the bargaining and equity committees. As a shop steward, she worked to improve the wages and working conditions of racialiazed union members. Murphy Browne is an impassioned, articulate writer and public speaker on issues of racism.

Murphy Browne believes that anti-Black racism continues to be covered up in Canada and the United States.

David Leonard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Critical Culture, Gender and Race Studies at Washington State University, Pullman and a regular contributor to our show.

During this podcast David gives us his thoughts on the Trayvon Martin incident.

David discusses various issues including the media and society’s stereotyping of young African American men, the lack of response by government, the impact that social media has had on this story, the response from the African American community and White community – Why aren’t we all outraged?, the need for all us to address serious issue and the hope that this incident can bring unity and discussion amongst all of us.

Recently, we held a Black mens roundtable about the Trayvon Martin and the aftermath with Black men from Canada, the United States and England.

What does it mean that people from all races are upset about the Trayvon Martin incident?

What does this incident say about the status of Black men in society today?

Does it help having celebrities involved to increase awareness?

What are they hearing from young Black men about the Trayvon Martin incident?

Is this is a justice based or a racial based case?

Many of us have been affected by the death of Trayvon Martin.

Tonight at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. EST, Black men from three countries (Canada, the United States and England) will be discussing about Trayvon Martin and the effect it has had on Black men and the Black community.

We will be sharing with Chef Rock Harper (@rockthecook), Dax-Devlon Ross (@daxdev) and Clive Henry (@clivehenry1) about this issue. We have invited other guests to the show and we hope to confirm their appearance before the show.

Also joining us for the discussion tonight is Powys Dewhurst. Powys Dewhurst is an award-winning independent director, director of photography, and occasionally a photojournalist and writer for magazines and newspapers. Recently his work was selected to represent Canada at EXPO 2010 by the Government of Canada and Cirque du Soleil in China with 70-90 million international visitors.

Faydra Deon who lives in Virginia is on the go. She works on client’s sites, does editing for clients, teaches at a community college, does her own writing, does web design for clients, teaches social media, web language development, SEO and computer applications. Before all of this, she was a grade eight teacher and before that Faydra was in the army for six and a half years. Faydra majored in African American studies at Howard University.

Faydra has always knew that teaching was be part of her life Her parents set at high standard for her and her other siblings to live up to. She starting using the computer when she was thirteen. Faydra did not think about making a living as a writer until two years ago.

Faydra provides help for people who need help in various areas such as publishing and social media. She is committed to helping people getting their books published.

During our conversation, Faydra shares about so many great things including telling her us something about her mom that her mom doesn’t know that she knows, the story behind her new site the Independent Author Index, her thoughts about how Blacks are using and approaching social media and how are Blacks are approaching the digital divide?

Faydra spends the last part of our conversation by giving some do’s and don’t about being successful with social media and her takes on the following social media platforms: WordPress, Google Analytics, Blogger, Google+, Tumblr, Linkedin, Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook.

Tanya C. Walker

Tanya obtained her Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree from McMaster University in 2002 and law degree from Osgoode Hall in 2005. She was called to the bar in 2006. Tanya received the Simms Shuber award from Osgoode Hall for the highest academic standing in corporate governance.

In 2010, Tanya was appointed by the Lieutenant Governor for a judicial role with the Assessment Review Board. In that role, Tanya adjudicates property tax disputes.

In 2010 and 2012, Tanya was featured on the black history month poster, which is displayed in all government buildings including schools, libraries, and fire stations across Canada during the month of February. In 2010, Tanya was a recipient of Women’s Enterprise Woman of the Year award. She received the most votes among nineteen other candidates.

This month Tanya presented to the United Nations, Women’s Federation of World Peace for International Women’s Day. In May, Tanya will be co-hosting Sesheme Foundation 3rd Annual Gratitude Gala with Farley Flex.

Tanya practiced at mid-sized downtown Toronto firms before creating Walker Law, a commercial litigation firm located on Bay Street, in the heart of downtown. In addition to Tanya, Walker Law employs another lawyer and a law clerk.

Tanya is a member of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers, the Ontario Bar Association Franchise Committee, the Women’s Executive Network, and the Black Business and Professional Association. Tanya is also one of the founders of group Leading Ladies.

Tanya will be live on our show on March 24, 2012 at 3 p.m. EST/12 p.m. PST. Tanya will be sharing about the following topics:

Henri or “Hank” Morris started his journey in the beauty industry under the tutelage of makeup artist and designer Paige Canady and hair entrepreneur Mike Chavis at the age of 19 in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Henri has worked across the United States and Canada. His work has been published in magazines from the United States to London. In 2001, Henri settled in California while working and training under Carnette and Maurice Burnett and their partner Andre Edwards of BIA International. It was at BIA International that Henri honed in on his skills as a stylist and platform artist.

Henri has worked with well-renowned fashion photographers Christopher Ford, Will Sterling, Keith Savage, Milton Perry, and Jon Ledeux. Henri has worked with celebrities, Ann Nesby (formally of Sounds of Blackness), Jamecia Bennett (daughter of Ann Nesby and mother of American Idol finalist Paris Bennett), Terri J. Vaughn, Tichina Arnold, Gloria Govan (Basketball Wives – L.A.), Chante Moore, Wynton Marsalis, Dionne Ferris, and Deja Bryson (niece of R&B legend Peabo Bryson).

Henri is currently freelancing and co-hosting ProBBfm Radio Show on independent radio station Ozcat Radio, Vallejo, California.

Norwood Holland is a freelance and lawyer who practices labor law. His first published book is called “Sleepless Nights”.

Norwood grew up in Washington, D.C. descendant of the slaves of the first American president, George Washington. He grew up in a all Black world which changed when he started going to a segregated high school were there were limitations.

Norwood tells us about the love his mother gave him when he was growing up, how he started read his mother’s romance novels when he was growing up, how he enjoyed reading fiction more than going than to law school,

Norwood continues our discussion by then telling us how he didn’t start writing until after completing law school, how he published his first book after writing for 20 years, story behind “Sleepless Nights”, the importance of Black men and mental health and how it is part of “Sleepless Nights” and his call to action in regards to dealing with Black men and mental health.
