The Dr. Vibe Show: David Leonard “After Artest: The NBA And The Assault On Blackness”

0

Dr. David Leonard

David Leonard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Critical Culture, Gender and Race Studies at Washington State University, Pullman and is a regular contributor to our show.

David has just released his new book, eight years in the making, “After Artest: The NBA And The Assault On Blackness”. The book looks at the NBA since the famous “Malice At The Palace” brawl and how it changed the landscape of the NBA and how the NBA deals with race, the criminal justce system, politics, educational system, injustice. – the history behind the book –

During our discussion, David talks about the book, his thoughts on David Stern and how he deals with race, how NBA fans perpetuate racism and stereotypes which are reflected in popular culture, how the NBA owners are an “old boys network”, if Black fans understand the racial undertones of the NBA, how race fits into the culture wars going on in the NBA and will the NBA lose its Black fan base?

David also discusses why he is losing his love of the NBA, that while game is still beautiful but the way the league and media treat it is a problem, why are more Black NBA players not pushing back?, why most media don’t ask what Black players about social issues and what question does he have for David Stern (NBA commissioner).

The Dr. Vibe Show: Live At 9 P.M. EST/6 P.M. PST – Mike Ramey And Victory Unlimited “Has Being A Man Gone Out Of Style Today?”

0

Mike Ramey

Victory Unlimited

Join syndicated writer Mike Ramey and Victory Unlimited of The Victory Unlimited Show tonight for our monthly “Allies Roundtable” at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST.

Tonight, we will be talking about “Has Being A Man Gone Out Of Style Today?” During our chat we hope to touch on some of these issues:

The definition of a man: What was it then, and what is it now?

What has replaced manhood as the goal for young black boys today?

What were some of the rights of passage that were used in the past to
help boys become men? Do we still observe any of them today?

What role has the media and pop culture (both news, entertainment,
commercials) contributed to the current view of manhood?

How has the changing socioeconomic climate contributed to the role of men within the current relationship dynamic?

What is the upside to being perpetual little boys and what’s the downside in becoming full grown men?

What are some of the barriers that black men face when they attempt to fully embrace their manhood?

What are some strategies that we can implement in the short term and in the long term to build better men?

What can we do to bring the concept of “being a MAN” back in style?

You don’t want to miss it!! The “Allies Roundtables” are becoming classic listening.

During our live discussion, you have the opportunity to call in and share with us and ask questions via Skype. If you would like to do this, please call us at: doctorvibe42. If you get through, please be patient and we will get to your call as soon as possible.
